I adopted an 8 month old cat from the humane society yesterday. He came with a vet history that he was up to date on shots and had appropriate testing done (FIV, etc.) He only has one eye that they said was lost to Infection when he was a kitten. Today I have noticed that the missing eye is a little weepy and also that it sounds like he has a slight cold. His good eye is not running and neither is his nose but when he is eating or purring his breathing sounds a little wet. I already have a vet appointment set up because I thought he should have a general checkup but it's not until Tuesday the 24th. ( I live in a small area with one vet so it's always hard to get appointments) do I need to try to push up the appointment or do you think these are minor things that can wait? The weepy eye is confusing me because i had assumed the eye had been stitched shut when it was lost so I'm not sure what's going on. I would appreciate any advice, thank you.

We had a one eyed Persian. We adopted him right after his enucliation. I don't remember there being any weeping. His good eye did.

Call the vet and get on a cancel list. Explain the problem and maybe they'll get you in sooner. Or call the shelter and see if they will get him in to the vet who did the original surgery

It is clear but a little thick, not runny just kind of gooping up. I wipe it then find a little more later.

Actually I think Peter had a herpes infection in his good eye. We did do eye drops

Thank you! I think I will call Monday and try to get in. Whatever it is doesn't seem too bad but I don't want to chance it getting worse. I have heard of herpes in their eyes, wonder if he could get it in the missing one!

It's normal to have a small mucus or water discharge. Oil and mucus are naturally produced in the eyelids. If it's watery, clear or white it's usually not infected or urgent. But a vet should make sure the socket is alright. Especially if it is having a lot of discharge. The normal functions of the lids will try and still produce the substances even with the eyeball itself gone.

Our vet thought it was likely herpes infection was what initially took his other eye.
