River went to the vet today because she had a limp, it turned out one of her toes/claws was abscessed.  The vet said she either snagged it, or it was from a claw trim.

I trim my cats' nails about once a month, and the big reason I trim hers is she does tend to snag them (she has a neurodevelopmental disorder- probably cerebellar hypoplasia).  The others just get trimmed so they don't do as much damage when they scratch, lol.  She "tap dances" across the floor because her nails are always out for extra stability.  So I'm sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place on what to do, since I don't know which thing caused the infection.

I'm thinking that maybe filing her nails might prevent it (using a dremel?) if it was caused by a claw trim, since I know I didn't cut it too short I'm guessing it was caused by the nail being jagged.  But I'm not entirely sure.  I also think it might just be a fluke and just to leave it alone.  Anyone have experience?

I don't have experience in your kind of situation but I did just buy a Nail Grinder to cope with my cats' claws.  It definitely produce a smoother edge than using a clipper and my cats don't seem to mind it as much as having their claws clipped.  If a jagged claw end was involved in River's problem, this tool would prevent that.
