So Taz, our little WMD rascal of a kitten, likes to chomp on anything that gets close to him (playfully). We are not experienced at all with cats, so maybe you folks can help us with some advice. Taz is a sweet, 6 month old kitten. He is just incredibly hyper, constantly alert and bites on anything that gets close to him. He used to pounce and bite all over our ankles and hands while we're sitting, but enough yelps and ignoring is starting to have an effect in that regard. He still pounces, but without biting, which is adoreable. Now he doesn't do that, and only bites if your hand gets close enough to him, except when he is so tired and sleepy.

My question is regarding playing tag. I just discovered that the reason he constantly pounces is because he wants to play tag? So he stalks, charges, then leaps up when he is just near my foot and sometimes slaps my leg (no claws), turns and bolts away while making an excited trilly sound. I tried chasing him and he loved it. He hides, watches and waits for me to run towards him, make a little jump next to him, trill and run away and he will always be running after me untill he is close enough to leap and slap my leg again.

Is this kind of playing going to reinforce his playbiting habit? Am I teaching him that I'm a big toy? My wife brought up this concern, though I should say that he has never bitten me while playing this game. Is this a bad way to play with him, in terms of what behaviors he might learn?

I don't think so - from what I know playing tag/chase with cats is common and as long as you're fine with it and he's not getting agitated by being chased it should be fine.
