Any ideas as to why?
Upper right side of this post, under how many posts I've made / when I joined.   You should see some ribbons and a purraise amount (64).

The problem I'm having is that I can't see YOURS.  (no little ribbons and no purraise number).

Ideas?

I think that's intentional.   I can't see your purraise - I can only see my own.   That's true for all of us.

Okay, so from looking at just any of my posts, you don't know if I have any purraise or not.   Correct?

That's correct.  That number is for you alone.
Okay.  I just thought I used to be able to see it and now can't.

margd margd is correct. We do not want Purraise to turn into a contest, so you can only see your own. :)

No problem.  I understand now.
I just thought I "used" to be able to see it, and then couldn't.
I must have been mistaken though.

No problem. Question answered.
Thanks!

But aren't the Pawsitive Person annual awards a contest?
Absolutely not. We are recognizing members for their contributions and we take the process very seriously. First we take nominations from the members and the Team. We then painstakingly go through the members posts to see if they represent the award they were nominated for. Once the list is narrowed down the Mods will vote and during that process we often go back through the posts again. It's actually a very tough decision for us and certainly can't be considered a contest.

I meant a contest in the sense that posters would like to have a Pawsitive Persons award just as they like to receive any kind of praise. The praise is hidden, but everyone can see the other awards. Some people might feel that they should have gotten an award & are disappointed when they don't receive one. Or that someone received an award that, to others, seems unjustified. Some posters have gotten consecutive awards. To me, this very much seems like a contest.

I see your point @Primula  but I think the  difference goes beyond semantics here. The purraise system is automated whereas the community awards are anything but. As you can see by the process that Karen described, it would be impossible to manipulate the awards, for example. Well, unless someone wants to offer the moderators an all-inclusive cruise to the bahamas or something

I guess a very competitive person could see both as contests but I prefer to think neither the community awards nor purraise are. The former is the community's way to officially recognize members with distinct contributions and the latter is a way for each member to send a little "thank you" or "pat on the back" message with the click of a button. For myself, I think both work well for TCS at this point, though I'd love to see more people using the purraise button more often.

Why hide the purraise? People would most likely use the purraise button more if the results could be seen.

Because then it could turn into a competition about who has the most purraise and people would be giving purraise where it wasn't necessarily warranted. That would in turn make the purraise less meaningful.

I know people who have turned the amount of friends they have on Facebook into a contest. We used to have a "gift" system here on the site where you could send another member a gift and a small icon would appear on their profile. That turned competitive with how many could have the most gifts. :dk: Some people are just competitive.

A lot of thought went into this when we introduced the purraise system. Obviously, this is not the only forum that uses such a system and there is actually some amount of research done on the effects.

We consulted with social platforms experts at the time and the conclusion was that the disadvantages of showing a reputation score outweighed the potential advantages. I can't really go into the entire discussion here, obviously, just know that the decision was not taken lightly and it's as evidence-based as possible, not just a matter of personal opinions.

Didn't mean to start any controversy.

I simply thought that I "used to" be able to see everybody's purraise "number".
And then I couldn't.  (as if a setting had changed or something).

No big deal.  I was just mistaken.

This may be a redundant question but since I can see the purraise ribbons on the top right of my screen does that mean others can see it too or only me?  I'm actually a very modest person and was hoping it would be hidden from other members.

No one else can see them.   The only ones we can see are our own.

I don't think that you started any controversy.  It was a legitimate question that I'm sure other people were wondering about but possibly didn't want to ask. Now it's been clarified for all of them as well.
