My cat Ernie jerked when I was giving him a liquid syringe of Burprenex for pain after having a tooth pulled and dental cleaning.  Now his eye is highly closed and he keeps pawing at it.  I'm sure it's irritating for him.  I lightly washed it out with water and then put some Refresh eye drops in - same as a human would take - all natural tears.  He's sitting quietly, likely due to being doped up, but I should I take him to the vet?

Call the vet right away and ask them.  And be very careful about putting anything in his eye that is made for humans.  Be sure to get the vet's okay on that, too.

I really think he'll be fine but I agree with Margd.  You should give his vet a call just to be sure.

Instead of Human eye drops, which may be harmful to cats, use sterile saline or a pet specific eye wash instead.

As a general rule, never use Human OTC medicines and products or prescription Human products on a pet unless the vet specifically says so and has given youu instructions on how to use it. Many Human products are harmful, even toxic, to pets. if you're not sure, call the vet and ask.

IF what you have is 'plain' "Refresh Tears ( http://www.refreshbrand.com/Products/refresh-tears   ), then you're fine to use those and for as long as it takes to clear the Bup and restore the normal tear balance in the eye - and stop the irritation.

I hope you know that the Buprenorphine needs to be absorbed inside the mouth...not swallowed like most other oral meds...?

The damage, if there is any, is already done. As long as you rinsed his eye as soon as you could, that is all the vet could have done also. I would call the vet too, just to see if there is anything you should be watching for, such as scarring. etc. but I truly think that anything that was meant to be taken orally should not be caustic. It most likely stung badly and it may take a day or two for any swelling or redness to pass, but I think he will be fine.
