Had to take cat to Emergency room

He has had a bad infection for quite some time. Figured out that it may have been teeth related, had teeth pulled (vet had seen ulcer on bottom of tongue by infected tooth). He was on marbofloxacin previous to this for about a 1.5 months to try and shrink enlarged lymphnodes that no one could figure why. The antibiotic did shrink them. He started to have weird symptoms like it hurt to eat and the found rotted teeth. Anyways, it looks like my little guy is in ICU for the next couple of days. His potassium levels were non existent. I wonder if the Marbo induced Hypokalemia? This seems to be the reason why he has lost a ton of weight, won't eat, shakes when walking and bobs his head. Today, he could barely move.

I hope he does not have cancer. I have spent a ton of money on this guy, probably over 10k trying to figure out what is wrong with him. His daddy was a show cat, valued way over that... but you know what, he has been and still is my best buddy. Acted more like a dog than a cat. If he does not make it, I regret nothing. I can't take the money with me, and I at least have a good job and no debt to afford it. Either way, I would do it again. I hope he pulls through and the emergency vets figure out what is going on...

Met the IM vet tonight. My buddy looks a little better, but they still are trying to get his potassium levels up. I fed him via syringe, and his eyes perked up. He meowed, and myself and my sig other talked to him for a good half hour before they needed to put him back on meds.

The IM vet is a known CDC/infectious disease specialist, which thank god. Unfortunately, she said she has NO IDEA what is going on. He has a slight fluid build up in his abdomen, and his adrenal glands are larger than normal.

She did mention that is does not seem like Addisons, or IBD, but agreed to give him IV antibiotics, B complex, and steroids to see if that helps, at this point she is throwing the kitchen sink at him.

She made ONE interesting note. She studied with an infectious disease doctor on the east coast I think university of Carolina. World renown doctor, who, she said would say that he is exhibiting the classic signs of "Cat Scratch Fever" or better known as Bartonella. Although the scientific community will heatedly debate each other on this, she said her mentor would say that is what he has. She called him while we were there and he indicated what IV antibiotic he should be on. She noted that ALL cats carry this disease but it can rear its ugly head after numerous stressful circumstances or surgery.

Basically at this point, if this new treatment does not work, I will have no choice but to humanly send him on his way. I am praying and crossing my fingers. I could see in his eyes that he missed me and purred and meowed. God this hurts....

Oh, I wish you had better news.  I know this is tearing you up, the not knowing, leaving him there and feeling so helpless to help him.
 

You have to be strong for him, and I know how hard that it when it feels like a good part of you is just as sick as he is, part of you dying like you think he may be.  I made a deal with my cat to not give up on me and I would not give up on her.  I said this prayer for 3 days straight & it worked for us. I don't know your faith, but you have said to pray & that you are as well.  One more cannot hurt.
