I'm going to put my kitty on an elimination diet to see if it cuts down on her shedding, weepy eye and sneezing. She doesn't have any serious health issues but I think she sheds more than the usual seasonal shedding and it's affecting my allergies now too. Someone told me that her cat was doing the same until she got her on a grain free and hypoallergenic diet. She also scratches her ears more than I think she should. I was going to start with cutting out foods with chicken since I've read that it's one of the most common allergens to dogs and cats. A lot of foods now have potatoes and peas if they are grain free. Would it be more common to have a meat protein allergy or another ingredient such as peas? Just trying to figure out how to handle the food change. She's currently eating Solid Gold Indigo Moon for dry and various brands and flavors of wet food.

Weepy eye and sneezing are not normally caused from food allergies.  Those CAN be caused be Feline Herpes, if they are pretty consistent. Or could simply be an Upper Respiratory Infection, if it's a one time thing, or even seasonal allergies.  If it's pretty consistent, most people give L-Lysine all the time, 150 mg twice a day unless it's a flare-up,then 50o mg twice a day.

As far as the shedding and scratching around her head, this can definitely be food related.  Common food allergens are:  Corn, Wheat, Soy, dairy, eggs, beef, seafood. and, yes, chicken.

I don't honestly know why limited ingredient foods normally contain peas, but they do...I've read that peas have lots of protein, although since cats are obligate carnivores I'm not sure it's all that helpful to have them in their food
.  I guess they have to have something that will make the food thicken and maybe it's the peas, since they don't use gums or carraggeenan (sp) either (at least Natures Variety Limited Ingredient doesn't)

My kitty is on L-Lysine as the vet thinks it's feline herpes too. I just got her Natural Balance Peas & Venison dry and wet food to see if her itching lessens or goes away. She's never had venison so figured I'd start there.
