Hi,

I have a problem with a yowling cat.

She is a feral that I’m trying to domesticate. I recently caught her, though ’ve been feeding her for almost a year. I’m keeping her in my bedroom while I try to socialise her. Things are going quite well, except for the wailing. The wailing has caused some complaints from the neighbours, and I’m afraid that I will have to give up on the whole thing unless I can stop it somehow.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ray

Hello Raywalsh22,

If she is not in pain she is definitely on heat. Is she spayed?

Here's an article on spaying and neutering :-

Thanks Tabbytom,

She has been neutered.  I think the yowling is caused by the frustration and anxiety caused by being in captivity. I caught her only a week ago.

She was spayed about 6 months ago. I caught her previously but released her soon after she was spayed because she was so stressed.

Is she always heading for the door when she does this?  It can take time to acclimate a feral or stray to the indoors.  How many other cats do you have and how often do you allow them to interact (assuming she's fully vaccinated)?

Do you see any signs this might be a health issue?

Can you spend more time with her as she get use to your house rather than leaving her alone? Since the recapture is just one week, and this is the second or third time recapturing her?
Proably she is confused but it takes time to socialize her. Please spend more time with her so that she get use to you faster.

Thanks for your replies.

She usually wails while pacing my bedroom. I,m confident it's not a health issue as she has been visiting my room for a year. I've been feeding her and she's never done it before.

I'm a student writing a thesis, so I spend most of the day in my room with her.

Thanks again

It's super normal, it's from the completely unfamiliar place, this is foreign to her.

It won't continue for long, usually a good week or so and that stops once she starts adapting to the newness of the room.

So she might be quite a vocal cat and most likely is bored and she's is asking for something like asking you to open the door or play with her.

thanks for your helpful advice Catwoman and TabbyTom.

Hopefully it won't go on for too much longer.
