Chronic Diarrhea in our 6 month persian

They have a good protocol in place to help cats when vets just keep throwing meds at you.

She was on S. Boulardii for a good 2-3 weeks initially. It seemed to have a positive effect for awhile (never perfect) but didn't keep the diarrhea completely at bay, but still helped. So basically, with S. Boulardii, we were back to step 1 in 1-2 weeks. The Enzyme treatment actually did nearly cure her, but only for several days (and those several days were nice for us!

What we do know for sure is that she has Giardia (and the Coronavirus, but that's not surprising).

She's been on GI Prescription dry food for several months. Our vet was thinking about changing her to a prescription fiber food. But they've also been more (and I agree) into the "one thing at a time" camp.

We've kinda moved away from "change the diet" after finding out about the Giardia. IBD seems like a symptom of giardia, and that's typically what raw feeding helps solve. I'm not sure why we're all focused on IBD now. The fact that she's Giardia positive remains. Is switching foods really the answer? Not that I'm against it...just seems like that's focusing on the symptoms...

Well, if you were trying to treat the giardia with S. Boulardii 2-3 weeks isn't long enough, you have give it for at least a month.

If you get desperate enough and want a more bio appropriate approach, join the group I linked. Is changing to raw the answer? Maybe. Quite possibility. It will no doubt help. There are so many things wrong with commercial foods they are without a doubt impacting our cats immune systems and ability to fight off infections because cats simply aren't designed to eat all the things in most commercial foods. I'd run as fast as possible away from RX foods.

Yea. We still have her on S. Boulardii, but we had to take a break with the Enzyme treatment.

We actually have been giving her S. Boulardii for the past few days since we've ended the first phase of the Enzyme Treatment.

I hear that Tylosin doesn't kill gut bacteria, so that's a good thing. Seems like we can pair that up with S. Boulardii.

We may eventually go to raw food, but we still want to do one thing at a time.

We still need to finish the Panacur (will start the 3 last doses in 6 days). We still need to follow up on Phase 2 of the Enzyme Treatment. Once that gets done, she will go on the Tylosin. As she's on that after a little while, then may be a good time to play with the diet. Of course she'll get S. Boulardii during all these treatments (except for the Enzyme).

So yea, we're still doing a lot. I'm surprised the vet didn't try Flagyl again.

Hi There.

I found your thread but see you haven't posted an update for a couple months now. As I am having the same issue with my calico persian, who I adopted from the local shelter, I'd like to know if you have seen any breakthrough in your cat?

The only difference I would say is that my girl is older, about 7-8 years old and although is tall, is super skinny. But, she, too, is not very energetic and is super jumpy all the time because of the discomfort I'm sure. Also, I can feel every bone in her body and this pains me because I know it's due to her not being able to absorb the nutrients she needs even though she eats the most out of all my cats.

Would love to hear an update from you so hopefully you'll be posting one soon!

Is your cat receiving vet care and if yes, what are they trying?
