My cat's hair has been really coarse and dull lately so I was advised to give him supplements and a high fat, protein diet. Should I give him a haircut to make way for the healthy fur or would his coat improve if I let him be?

I assume it was a vet who told you to use the supplements. Dry, coarse or brittle hair can be a symptom of a health problem so I hope this was ruled out. To answer your question, unless the hair is matted, I would just leave it alone. If you decide to go ahead and clip, unless you are experienced in clipping a cat I would suggest leaving it to the professionals. Cats skin is very elastic and easily cut.
