Hi everyone, I'm new to this site.
I have a Devon Rex female who has had 6 kittens 10days ago. They are all doing well however whilst having a cuddle thisafternoon I'm sure I felt another kitten moving in the mum cat. I just read online that there is a phenomenon called superfetation where an animal can carry babies of different gestational ages. Has anyone experience or heard of this happening?
Thanks, ash

That are adorable, it's nice to see that they are well. And yes this is indeed possible some cats have had 2 separate litters because of different suitors and a heat cycle while pregnant or at another time in the same heat cyclr:D

Yes, I too have heard of this phenomena.  Not this name as such, but this phenomena...  So for example, one of my ex-neighbour had a kitten / cat from such a second litter.    So with any luck, everything should end happily.   but you will have many kittens to take care of.   Be sure momma gets much of good nourishment, including some extra calcium.   :)

It's a rarity, if it even occurs, so if you felt something, play it safe and get momma and babies together and get her to the vet ASAP.

Im not sure its necessary,.   Also, in the vet place, there IS some raised risk for infections "infection pressure".  Its not necessary to risk the newborns kittens to meet all these extra bacteria and viruses.

Its one thing if they ARE sick or wounded, and you must take this calculated risk.  but if the babies are without real problems, why take the risk?

It may though be wise to let a vet check up mommas health.

Because we're not there to examine her.  Much can and is often misconstrued on an internet forum.

Newborn kittens can safely be taken with the mother to the vet, vet clinics take great care to ensure exam rooms are disinfected properly.
