Hello,

Boy did I find this site just at the right time. Both of our cats Frank (m; 3 months) and Babs (f; 2.5 years) have had some health issues this past weekend. I posted about Babs earlier but now I have a question about Frank.

We found him one month ago darting across a road. We took him to the vet immediately, who discovered that he had a raging coccidia infection. He was put on albon for a week originally which alleviated the symptoms but did not manage to clear the infection. He was then put on a second, longer round of albon which he finished about 8 days ago. He had been doing well since that time, but the diarrhea has returned in the past day or so and he is leaking again.

Based on your experiences and knowledge, do you think he should be eating dry food or boiled chicken and rice right now? Also, should we add some pumpkin? When we originally started treating him the vet said not to add pumpkin, as he was going frequently. Should we once again hold off on the pumpkin?

We probably haven't done him any favors, as he was on dry food up until a couple of days ago, then some chicken, rice and pumpkin and then today we switched him back to dry food with some pumpkin.

Also, I have been adding a bit of pedialyte to his water. Sensible, right?

Can you take a stool sample tomorrow for the vet to re-test, you want to be sure he has eradicated the coccidia - this could help answer the dietary questions.  Since he's had 2-3 days of diarrhea, it might be best to have him seen so the vet can gauge his hydration status.

I wouldn't give the pumpkin any more and keep him on his dry food unless the vet advises otherwise.  He's had a long road to recovery and needs his nutrients from his kitten food (chicken and rice is fine in times of extreme illness, but he's a young kitten, and needs his nutrients for growth and development).

Since he's so young, he should be eating canned kitten food 2-3 times a day as well as free fed kitten food.  I liked to give my kittens Royal Canin kitten food.

Took away the pumpkin. We'll keep him on the dry food and deliver a stool sample to the vet tomorrow.

I wish our vet would do the ponazuril thing. They've never heard of it :(

Ponazuril isn't approved for use in cats and dogs, and I wouldn't use it unless as a last resort, even then, it would have to take some heavy convincing for me to consider it safe- common side effects are vomiting and diarrhea, but there's been reports of more serious effects.  It's being used off-label by some shelters, but it has to be compounded and it's expensive in it's original form (vets are diluting it).

It could be re-infection from the environment - keep the litter boxes impeccably clean (scoop frequently, and clean and rinse followed by bleach, then rinsed well, once or twice a week).  Wait for fecal results and your vet's direction.
