Not really a health issue, just not sure where to put it (mods can move if needed).

It's really a curiousity on my part. How many of you can feel the bones of your cats' spine?

I know if you feel ribs, the cat is too skinny (or general rule of thumb). I can't feel my cat's ribs, but I do feel his spine. I haven't had many cats before in my life so I really don't have comparison. vet says he's of perfect weight and health so I have no concerns

My other cat I can't feel the spine without pressure, though she's fluffy with a lot of skin.

I can feel Leroy's spine. He's an Aby so he's just naturally skinny with little fat under his skin. Emma's spine is harder to feel but she's not fat or overweight at all.

As long as you can't see the spine, or it doesn't feel really bony and spiky against the skin then that okay. You should be able to feel it with a bit of pressure. Also you really should be able to feel the ribs as well. They shouldn't be sticking out but with a little pressure you should be able to easily feel them. So many cats these days are overweight that people tend to be shocked when they see how thin an animal needs to be to be at an ideal healthy weight.
If you look up body condition scoring in cats that will give you some good info on how your cat should look and feel weight wise.
