My family recently adopted a very young kitten tat turned out to have panleukopenia and died less than three weeks later.  We are heartbroken of course, but still want to add a kitten to our family.  I'm concerned because I understand that panleukopenia is a very hardy virus and we have carpets and other hard to disinfect furniture.  If we adopt a 12-16 week kitten that has had 2 sets of immunizations, will we be putting it at risk?  Or are two sets of immunizations enough to protect it?

FeLV is Feline Leukemia Virus :). Panleukopenia is commonly called "distemper" although it's actually a parvovirus.

But anyway, yes, panleuk is a very hardy virus and is difficult to get rid of. I wouldn't recommend getting a kitten younger than 16 weeks, well actually 18 weeks, because I would want the cat to have had at least one vaccine at/after 16 weeks plus wait 2 weeks to make sure he/she developed full immunity. At that point I think you could be reasonably certain that the kitty is as immune as possible.

What @Willowysaid plus I would seek the advice of your vet.
