If you go to the tikipets website & select a product, above Recipe & Ingredients, there's a banner you can click on which takes you to the Grill & Luau page.

To me this is confusing to have two different pages for one product, as I decided to feed my cats off the original page (I didn't realize they changed), so I wrote to them. Even after comparing the ingredients, the fat doubled for the Koolina Luau & the Puka Puka Luau went up just a little. They must be using different cuts of chicken now. They also took off the dry matter numbers on the new product pages.

I thought their food would be a good low fat option but not anymore, it's basically like other food with more of a price tag.

There are, indeed, some strange changes at Tiki! There was a thread about some of them last fall (it's here) and when the store where I buy Tiki asked them questions, they said they have a new calorie counting method, new AAFCO regs on nutrients, and differences in ingredients. They confirmed that some calorie counts decreased.

The cats still love Tiki as much as ever but I have noticed some minor differences in the texture: the shreds don't look quite as defined and even my husband, who only feeds the cats canned food once in a while, when I'm traveling, noticed that it looks a little (in his word) "mushier." That sums things up! The main thing for now is that the cats are happy, though I'll have to check the fat numbers you mention. It's also not exactly reassuring that dry matter data are gone!

I remember that thread! I guess at the time since I wasn't feeding Tiki, it didn't really affect me. Then I bought some & found out it was different than expected.

I was writing back & forth with a gal named Lexi Hill. She gave me the DMB fat numbers 12/28/16. All I asked about were the 2 chickens without fish. I was gonna ask about all the Gourmet Carnivore but since I didn't feel my questions were really getting answered, I didn't even bother asking more.

I have one cat that's super picky. She won't eat anything pate, she loves the shredded meat so that's why I went with Tiki. Weruva used to be good enough for her but I think she likes things more meaty, Weruva is too soupy. Another poster explained Fussie Cat was shredded but I have yet to look into that food. I don't typically like a bunch of starch & that one has it.

I've also noticed a difference with TC's GC line and Succulent Chicken.  I was using it for a couple months but the meat has changed.  It's only a small part of their diet but I decided to try Feline Naturals instead, they loved it and the meat is much better quality.

Yes, Feline Natural is great food, our cats love the chicken/lamb.

Back to Tiki, oddly, some of the GC cans seem fuller than ever before, though the shreds of meat (last night it was chicken/turkey) are much finer. At this point, the cats are happy so I guess I am, too.

Has the "Gourmet Carnivore" line changed as well?  I thought only the "regular" (now "Grill & Luau") cans have been updated.  :/

At least some, yes: the GC chicken and life is now a luau, too. I don't know about other new cans because the store where I buy said Gourmet Carnivore has been on back order. Also worth of a :/ The cats really love Gourmet Carnivore!

Thanks for the info.  I've been a little overwhelmed with my new teaching job this year and haven't been very active here.  I feed mostly the GC Chicken with Duck Luau, but the packaging hasn't been updated yet.  I guess it's only a matter of time :(

I know what you mean, I'm just kind of waiting on these, too! If I remember correctly, the chicken/duck does have that mushier look... I remember that chicken/turkey did last night, Though that wasn't a luau! [emoji]128512[/emoji]

Our cats love that one! First they slurp up the juice, then they eat the chunks and shreds of meat. I'm sorry your cats don't like it!

too bad you aren't close, I'd give it to you instead of trying to force it down their throats!

Maybe they'd like it with some treats crumbled on it? (You probably already tried that, though...) It's such good food!

yeah totally. or fortiflora. I'm just tired of adding extras just to get them to eat.

What's funny is one of my cats is on a low fat diet, both other cats go to the food & want to eat it! I have to shoo them away & say = that's not yours!

Hi,

I just joined because of this conversation.

Kaley has started eating Tiki  soon after she adopted us 4 years ago.

She has no teeth (gingivostomatitis), but is not as fond of pate as she is of the shredded chicken.   We've been on quite a journey with cat food (Pet Food Express is wonderful at taking cans back!).

With the change in the label design for the Tiki Puka Puka Luau, Kaley has begun licking the flag stones out back (last week) and  the clay litter tracked onto the floor and even in her cat box (this week).  Yes, it's clumping and Yes, it's scary  - but she is still pooping and peeing without any problem.  I do try to stop her and try  to wipe any litter out of her mouth, but haven't found any (without freaking her out about the box - it's not easy to quickly change litters to a low-dust one like Feline Pine).  Though it looked like she was eating it, she may have mostly been licking it. ???

Some say she's not getting enough minerals, like calcium.  This is so new.

I also buy other brands to give her variety, as well as bake chicken just for her as a treat.

The other brands are Intelligent Nutrients Pride and Wild Calling.  I also have a new one coming by mail - Life's Abundance (recommended from Jean Hofve's website).

This morning, when I was preparing the Tiki Puka Puka Luau, it seemed to smell sour to me, so I gave her the Life's Abundance instead.

I should also note that she's currently on a course of prednisolone because of her throat - it becomes inflamed evidenced by a "hard swallow" (dysphagia?) and she'll only eat small amounts if I hand feed her (and then, at its worse, she acts like she can't swallow or is going to puke).

Bottom line - is the Tiki making her sick?

Thanks

Wish I could edit the typos in my post! ;-)

Including that I gave her Wild Calling this morning - the Life's Abundance hasn't arrived yet.
