Hi,

We brought a new kitten into our home a few months ago. The little guy tested positive for Giardia so we had him treated with metronidazole meanwhile keeping him separate from the other cats till after treatment was done. We had him retested and came back negative, so shorty after Vet gave us the ok to put him in with our other three Bengal cats. Long story short all the cats now have diarreah. We ended up doing a pool sample of all four cats and came back giardia positive and TF positive. We just started treatment with Ronidazole on all four cats however one keeps puking up the liquid form of this medication. I am wondering if anyone else out there has had a kitten that can't keep the Ronidazole liquid form down? Should I get the pill form just for the one kitten that keeps puking up the liquid Ronidazole? I am waiting to hear back from my Vet Monday morning when he's back to work. Any suggestions out there is greatly appreciated.

Alaina,

Is there another vet at your regular clinic you can call and talk to?  Ideally, any vomiting needs to be reported to the vet right away so he can determine if the medication should be ceased.  The pill form may or may not be more tolerated, but in a kitten, don't take chances with this medication.  If there's no one else at your regular clinic until Monday, please, call a local emergency vet and see what they can advise you.  It would probably be wise to cease the medication for the kitten until you can talk to a vet directly.

Thanks for the response, I called the vets office today and the tech who administered the medication said to stop it for all of the cats till I can speak to my Vet on Monday to decide what to do from her on out. Kitten only puked up the medicine nothing else. She has since been eating and drinking regularly without vommiting. I am hoping there is a pill form available in Canada I can try to get her to take so I can treat all my cats at once to prevent reinfection. Getting down Ronidazole isn't easy with having four Bengals. None of them like the taste of it. poor little kitties.

I can imagine that kind of fun with 4 Bengals!

Glad to hear you ceased the meds, your vet will be able to tell you if he can get or compound the meds for you and then hopefully resume the treatment.

Yes oh what fun it is trying to give them medication they all equally hate! We have to wrap them in towels and it takes two of us to give them the medication. If only the littlest one would keep the Ronidazole down! I'm sure others have dealt with this before. Hope there is some suggestions out there. From what I've read Giardia is also hard to get rid of. So this may not be the only dose of meds we have to give the poor kitties.
