Hello All,

I have a one year old male cat.During the summer he was breathing very fast, and had a wierd sort of internal cough.

I took him to the vet, they said it could have been from the heat wave, but he was kept in air conditiong 24/7. She did some tests and sent him home with an antibiotic which he had to take once a day for 10 days. And prednisolone twice a day for seven weeks, then once a week, then every other day.it was an asthma medication s she suspected he had.

At the time we were feeding him a brand of cat food called hound and gatos chicken, but at the time we changed it to beeg, i asked her if it maybe be due to allergies but she said not likely, either way we changed it back to chicken and he was alright.

He stopped the medication for 5 months now, but at times he does the cough but it sounds like a cough from the inside.I took him to another vet, and the tests said he had inflammation somwhere, and white blood cells, i didnt really understand much.

So my question is should i get a third opinion now that he is doing the cough thing?
Thank you all for reading.

Hello Zico, I'm sorry to hear about your poorly cat! I'm no cat/medical expert but if your cat is coughing then it could be irritation somewhere inside the respiratory system. If he's got low white blood cells then he will struggle fighting any inflammation or infection which obviously isn't good! If it's really bothering you, I'd say get a third opinion even if it's just to put your mind at ease. Maybe try videoing him when he coughs so you can show the vet what it sounds like, if not make sure you're really detailed when you tell the vets what's wrong because some symptoms are common in a few illnesses. I hope he's okay and that he gets sorted out soon!

Was an xray ever done?  If not, do so NOW.   After this xray, another should be done within about 4 weeks to compare and see if there are any changes or new developments.  If asthma, bronchitis or pnemonia, these can be visualized on xrays so the vet can determine treatment approach.

Ask the vet to rule out viral infection.

Also get heart function evaluated - coughing and fast respirations could also be heart related, (i.e., heartworm, defects, congenital, etc)
