I'm sure this is no big deal to most of you here, yet I wanted to share. It's taken me a full 2 months to convince our Mr. Sparks, 2-3 adult, adopted shelter cat that it is perfectly fine to take cat naps on the couch. Apparently he was in a good home for a long while, as he has perfect house manners. Although there are some things he just wouldn't do, like even sit on my lap on the couch, despite all my encouragement. I mean seriously, what's the point of having a cat, unless it is to sit on my lap & get kitty loving.
This is the setting for his late afternoon TV station, aka bird watching window, He also has a window seat in the den and another cat tree in the living room. Depending on his mood & what's on TV, he moves accordingly. The rest of the time he is at my feet helping with my chores & cooking. He's a barrel of loving laughs and a perfect fit for our home. Thanks for letting me share our handsome boy.

And thanks for sharing how well you are all doing....I love stories like this. It makes my heart very happy to see a cat in a wonderful, forever home and to hear how happy he makes his new guardians.

Thanks everyone for not making me feel like a foolish old cat lady. Just so very happy that he is finally becoming totally comfortable in his new home. This has been a learning experience for DH & myself. We understand the patience & settling in portion due to our years with personal dogs & fostering. But cats aren't dogs and it's taken time to figure out his boundaries and what makes him comfy. I just try to keep encouraging him as much as I can. He has the run of the house, only my kitchen counters and tables are off limits. He loves being held and carried around, it's when I sit down with him that he becomes anxious. Not wanting him to feel he was being trapped, I always let him go the moment he said enough. Have my paws crossed that one day he'll come and sit on my lap on his own. If not, then I"m pleased that he wants lie next to me. He is our only pet, only has to share his space when grand dogs are visiting.

That's wonderful!  So nice when they get comfortable and start showing their affection.  We took in an older kitty when her owner died who was SO skittish.  It took a year for her to be comfortable sitting on my lap for more than a minute or two.  Now she will jump up on my lap for petting and snuggles and purrs away.  She still doesn't stay long but we've come a long way since we brought her home.

You're right, patience and lots of encouragement are the way to go.
