Teething & Diarrhea Related?

Our youngest boy, Opie, has been having intermittent diarrhea (about twice a day). The vet says he checks out clean, he's eating and drinking just fine. He plays like you would expect a 4-month old to play and is active.

But he is teething and I wondered if there was any relationship between the two things.

Is this something to just wait out until his teeth grow back in?

Thank you in advance!

It has nothing to do with teething.  How old is he and has he been dewormed at least 3 times? If not, it could be worms, and has his stool been tested for parasites like coccidia and giardia?  It could also be his food, what's he eating?

Thank you for the response Stephen.

Opie is about 4 months old now. He has not been wormed 3 times. He only gets dry food (that's all I give any of my 3) and it's formulated for all ages.

I mentioned his bouts of diarrhea to our vet 2 weeks ago when he was in for a check up...she didn't seem concerned but I'm going to call her again today. It just doesn't seem right for him to have this problem as often as he does (which is between 1-2 times a day).

Thank you again.

Hi

It's not normal at all.  It could be food related.  One way to control for this after talking to your vet is to do a simple boiled chicken and rice mix, as a mush for 3 days and see if that does the trick.  If yes then its a food problem and you need to find a food he won't react badly too.  Another technique is to fast him for 24 hours and then do the chicken and rice.

Given his age, normal deworming protocol is 3 times with Strongid-T, a common dewormer, a liquid you squirt in his mouth.

Again the 3d alternative is parasites and that can be tested for (fairly reliably) in house with a stoll flotation test, or for a definitive result (especially if in house was neg) is a PCR test that gets sent out.  Its a little more money but its 100% conclusive as they amplify the dna of any parasites and get a conclusive result.

What worries me is your vet.  Diarrhea that hasn't resolved on its own is a medical problem and could lead to worse things.  Parasites untreated in kittens have been known to be very dangerous t the kitten over time, and they are contagious to humans and other animals with ease.

Your vet should be doing a full work up on the stool, de-worming your cat again, and possibly a food trial before or after, or you may want to look for a new vet, imo.

One question I haven't asked and is important, how long has this been going on for?
