once in a while during winter time the roads get too dangerous to drive on (here in  South Carolina). my question is how much food to put down for a couple of days or do I use a self feeder? also have coons feeding

I once used a self feeder when I was gone for one night.  The raccoons destroyed it.  I found it way out in my yard ripped to pieces and all food gone.

If you do leave extra food, you may have no idea who is eating it.  I would just keep an eye on the weather and if you think it's going to get bad, then leave extra food the day before.  I would think the cats would be ok for a day.  Leaving a self feeding container may only bring more wild critters.

I'm sorry but  I can't think of anything other than leaving a feeder and possibly attracting raccoons.

You might look into one of those timed feeders and set the timer to a daytime hour.  The raccoons will not be out during the day.  Of course, depending on how sturdy the feeder is, hopefully, the raccoons can't tear it apart.

I am hoping someone who maintains a colony will have some advice.  My colony all ended up being brought inside!

I haven't been able to think of anything either. I just feed at the same time each day. I only give my ferals a night feeding. I shake one of the bowls and holler here kitty kitty. Within a few minutes they all come up and eat it all up.
I'm surrounded by fields and woods, so I guess whatever field they are in, they hear me and come running.

Our posts must have crossed.  Too bad they don't make sturdier feeders.  There is definitely a market for them!
