Hey guys,

So Gatsby is a pretty healthy kitty overal. He's 5 pounds weighing in almost at 9 pounds and on a good raw diet.

I've noticed though that his hair is thinning around his eyes and ears and his eyebrow whiskers which used to be long and made him look like a made scientist are gone.

Is this normal or should I take him to the vet for this? I know some cats go through some shedding but I don't know if this is normal.

Thanks guys any advice helps : )

Hair loss in the facial region of a cat is not unusual and is not a matter to worry or stress over especially if your kitty is healthy. Preauricular alopecia also known as facial alopecia is when a cat will lose hair and even gain bald patches between or above the eyes, and the ears. This is not abnormal and can occur in cats of all ages and gender. This is more common is short haired cats and it happens mostly after the age of 1 or 2 years. Facial alopecia does not indicate any diseases and is manly due to aging.  I am not sure it this is the cause of your cats hair thinning, so you should also look for any odd wounds or lesions above his eyes which can be the cause. The hair loss can even be triggered by the presence of ringworm. This will cause hair loss in the shape of a circle, if your cat is experiencing itchiness, or infections then this is probably the case. I don't consider myself an expert and if you are concerned, I would recommend just asking your vet about his hair loss, and I'm sure they can provide more information and possibly a explanation. (I am not sure what could cause his eyebrow whiskers to thin but I'm sure a vet will know.).

I hope my response helped! :)

I made a couple spelling errors,

here are the corrected sentences.

"I am not sure if this is the cause of your cat's hair thinning, so you should also look for any odd wounds or lesions above his eyes which can be the cause."

"This will cause hair loss in the shape of a circle, if your cat is experiencing itchiness, or infections then this is probably the case."

Hi everyone
My kitten, a five months old also is loosing hair on his eyebrows going up to his ears. Is thinning more every day. I took him to the vet almost two weeks ago and she said it was fleas.

I'm going to be honest, I wasn't convinced about this (it was a new vet). My kitten is an indoors cat and no contact with any person that has pets, or have I visited anyone with pets.
What any of you think?

Hi Hazel
See another pic below, It looks exactly like your kitty. I don't know if is anything I may need to worry about, the only thing I'm sure is he doesn't have fleas. I think I got/ or almost got scammed into buying meds(I did) and trying to get unnecessary tests done(didn't).
Please share your thoughts and suggestions. Thank you.

Thank you for the pictures. :)

Sorry I haven't responded in a while, I've busy with school all week, but after looking of your kitty, I am also pretty confident he does not have fleas, and he does look like my kitty. So, I think he has preauricular alopecia, because if he had ringworm, mites, fleas, etc., the bald spots would have looked pretty bad. Preauricular alpopecia as you may have read in my early posts is just when cats hair thins above or near their eyes. It's perfectly normal, and it is not a sign of any health issues. It's not something that needs treatment of can be prevented, so there's no need to worry and you did the right thing by not getting those tests and medication, he doesn't need it.

You may be very well carry the fleas.

This is one of the reasons (apart from the moral one) I never ever pet cats or let them approach me. No matter how much I like a cat, safety comes first.

Thank you Hazel for the info. And thankfully I didn't follow her advice, even though she did apply some meds for "fleas". They even called me for a follow up appointment, I declined. I'll be looking for a new vet.

Cat fleas can infest humans for a short time. Then the humans convey them to the cats.
