My cat is leaving spots of blood on the floor from where he was sitting, I was wondering if this was normal? He was just neutered a couple of hours ago. I also noticed he was dragging himself across the floor, as if he wanted to itch the area? Also i was wondering if I should change his litter to shreded paper because I heard normal litter is harmful? I am extremley worried about him and my vet is closed right now :(

Hi atticus3, are the drops of blood due to his dragging his butt on the floor? Can you check if the surgery site is opened? Just make sure that it is oozing blood anymore.
For the kitty litter, as long as he don't sit in the litter box or kick the litter up when he use the litter box, it should be ok. But if you are concern, then use shredded paper for the time being. Or if you can get hold on some pee pad, that'll be good too.

Thanks for your reply!
The blood isn't due to him dragging his butt on the floor.
The area is still really swolen but from as far as I can tell it doesn't seem to be opened, but if it isn't opened then I'm confused where all the blood is coming from, there are marks everywhere he sits!
( he licked the area a few times since he arrived)
Thank you again for your help.

The site will be swollen for a few days due to surgery and I think it's filled with blood. So maybe it is not dripping or oozing out but just the remnant from the surgery. Did the vet put an e-collar or buster on him to prevent him from licking the surgery site? In the meanwhile, you just observe and keep the site dry do not use tissue paper as it tends to stick on the site. A soft paper towel and gently dab. Hopefully it'll dry up fast.

Yes, he has an e-collar on right now although he's getting pretty good at taking it off :)
I will try to use a soft towel and dab if he'll let me
Thanks for all the help!

I agree with TabbyTom....I had Shortstack neutered when he was about 2 years old and fully developed.  He had one single incision, not two like your baby, but his oozed a bit for the first 24 hours.  I called the vet and he said it was to be expected, especially in that he was an older kitty.  It never bled--as in actively bleeding--just a spot here, there, where ever he sat.  And he licked his incision, he wasn't in a collar at all, the vet said it would be fine for him to lick it.  But I think they used a surgical glue to seal his incision and not stitches.  After the first 24-48 hours it stopped and he acted like nothing was wrong at all.  I still often think that he doesn't realize something is missing back there, if you didn't know him pre-surgery and seen him, you would think he is still intact.  Healing vibes heading your way!

Update: The bleeding got worse, it isn't oozing out or anything but the whole area is red (covered in fresh blood) I don't know if the wound is open or if there's another reason for this. I can't get him to the vet right now

Can you call them?  If there is bright red blood and active bleeding, he needs to go back to the vet.  Quite possible that he has opened up one of the wounds scooting and there is a small artery/vein that won't quit bleeding without intervention.

I called them, they told me to wrap ice in a towel and place it on the bleeding area and as long as it isn't getting worse then I could bring him in tomorrow. The good thing is that he is eating normally, and acting like his usual self. I hope nothing's wrong and he didn't open up any of the wounds :(

Poor guy!  Who knows, maybe the ice will do the trick and it will seal off.

My old guy was neutered when he was about 1, back in 2005.  He had a rough go of it, ended up with an abscess on his abdomen, and had to have surgery again.  My younger guy was neutered this past February, and he was great after the 1st 2 days. Just the bit of oozey-bloody stuff, and never acted like anything bothered him at all.  Let's hope your guy is just having some minor bleeding and it resolves itself with no further intervention!

Good luck with the ice pack.  I can just imagine me trying to hold an ice pack on either of my guy's bums

How is it now after the ice pack? If you are worried, bring your kitty back to let the vet have a look at it and put your mind at ease.

Yeah, I think that definitely needs to be seen by the vet.  If you think it's really bad or the bleeding isn't stopping, then get him to the ER vet right away.

The bleeding stopped when I checked today morning and he's acting normal, turns out that the vet that preformed the neutering isn't in today so the reception told me that as long as it isn't bleeding he could wait another day

Oh no!  Well, at least the bleeding has stopped.  If it looks like he is swelling back there take him in anyway for anyone to see him, that might mean it is bleeding inside the sac but the wound is sealed off with no external bleeding.  Keep an eye on it!

I have to ask-----how did he tolerate the ice pack to the booty???

At least the bleeding has stopped. The swell will be there for the next week or so. So no bleeding no worries ;)

He was a little squirmish but surprisingly he didn't really seem to mind after a few minutes

The way my two hate ice cubes, I think I would have a huge problem!  I'm just so glad to hear he is doing better
