Hi Everyone. I seem to have been having too many worries about my kitty after finding this forum. I hope to get your help and advice this time round as well!

Maybe I should explain alittle of my situation because it seems that I am having much worries about my kitty all of a sudden. My cat, Yangyang, is about 5 years old, domestic shorthair and we are from Singapore. We adopted him at 7 months. I've been in Australia studying since 2 and a half years ago and right now back home for the long long summer break. So I have not been seeing my kitty for an extended time but not more than 8 months? But have been home for 2 months right now and thus I'm back to taking care of my kitty (making me some what paranoid because I watch his every move). My mum has been doing a good, more like great job taking care of him while I am away!! So the reason of my sudden influx of concerns, even though my mum had seen most of them happen here and there, but she agreed that it is happening alittle more than what she's seen. I don't believe she's hiding anything to make me worry less cause she complains when she has to clean up so much. haha

Even though I've been away for so long, maybe some of you know it too, my kitty's behaviour isn't exactly different from before that I can't tell when something is wrong. Just putting it out there to make sure I am not seriously paranoid or something. haha But then again this situation I need help with is actually a mini big event (haha).

I hope I have not annoyed anyone with my long intro!

The main issue!!

On 1st January around 9am, my cat vomited like 5 times? I came to this conclusion by calculating the piles of vomit I found, big or small. I was around for most of his major vomit acts because he made a terrible meow as though in pain and ran up to my room to vomit. The first one was full of undigested tuna, second was just some water and then the third was full of undigested tuna again. He calmed down for awhile but about 20 mins later he vomited 2 more times. These were just brown stuff but the second one had one piece of undigested wheat grass. He had wheat grass like 3 days before, so I was confused! The undigested tuna is possibly from the tuna he ate at 630am. That is when he gets to eat a small can of tuna. One reason we thought of was because my parents had just came back from a weeks holiday at 730am and Yang started running around, also got carried by mum. So we thought maybe it was from the excitement that he ended up throwing everything out. I panicked so much at first. My parents said to calm down and observe him because he didn't go to hiding and he was out and about amongst us. But there was definitely alittle lack of energy which we suppose comes from all that vomiting. Another reason we thought could have caused it was that he might have came across some toxins. My brother came clean suddenly saying that the night before he saw a baby cockroach on the kitchen table and he went to spray it with pesticide, but couldn't find the little bugger after awhile. The next morning he saw it on the floor infront of the entrance of the kitchen. Yang loves cockroaches, so he said Yang might have either licked it or had put it in his mouth and spit it out because he said it was still intact (usually the cockroach would be in pieces). He said it wasn't munched up, so possibly Yang didn't even touch it. So those are the two possibilities. There was no more vomiting, he took a long rest in the afternoon but then was his normal self in the evening, playing with yarn and running around. I have dry food laid out all day, not alot, and he ate some.

Nothing happened on 2nd January. Phew!!

Today 3rd January, two days after, I found 2 vomit remnants? This probably happened in the wee hours of the morning before morning tuna cause I found it after I fed him. Oh yea, I have been putting way less food then I normally do, just to make sure his tummy is alright.  The presumably first vomit (cause there was more), was brown and had 2 unidentified grey looking lumps, size of like the smallest coin every country has? Gosh!! the things you will do for your baby huh?? I touched it... >< cause I wanted to know what it was. It was kinda hard and I think it might had been a hairball. Yang doesn't really throws out hairballs, I suppose due to his diet that should help him poo it out instead, so I've never really seen one.. :/ His fur is grey so I think it really is a mini hairball? The second vomit was just alittle more of the brown stuff. I found this after feeding him and he had ate everything up so well. He is active right now and nothing has changed.

I just wana know your opinion. I mean he isn't looking sick, he's not lethargic, he's active, still being him but I still wonder if this should be something I should have a vet look at. Or should I be checking up on his diet? Or looking at more ways to help with his digestion? I am also getting very confused about wheatgrass because my kitty does like grass and before my mum started giving him wheat grass he used to sometimes (on the lower end of sometimes) munch on the house plant. But nothing happened then and this is the first major vomiting act I've seen. I have hardly seen him vomit before. There was this one time I did, really really long ago. Mum said he does vomit but rarely? Like possibly able to count the times he vomited if she tried to remember.

The second day of vomit just got me wondering cause we thought all should be good now since nothing happened the day after. So sorry for the long post. I just didn't wana not give details and expect some help.

Sorry again for the long post!

Thank you so much for reading.

Before we dive in here - can you tell us what his diet is normally? What kind of tuna?

Ah! So I feed him a can of Applaws cat food every morning. I have different flavours available so he doesn't get bored? Like tuna fillet with seaweed, tuna fillet with cheese, tuna fillet, ocean fish. That day I gave him tuna fillet. He used to like chicken breast, but suddenly decided it wasn't to his taste, so we stopped buying that.

This is the website of the brand and the various can food available.  http://www.applawspetfood.com/product-category/cat/cat-can-broth/

Is that the only thing you're feeding? Applaws isn't meant to be their only diet source. It's not complete food for cats. It lacks enough taurine, an extremely necessary item for cats. They can't function without it.  It can cause blindness, heart disease and other problems. I wonder if the vomiting is due to this. Honestly, it should only be used as a "treat" food or to temporarily supplement when a cat is ill and refusing other food. Also, feeding only fish isn't recommended either.  I'd look for another source of canned food that specifically says it is a "complete" food, although I see you're in Singapore and that could be difficult?

BTW I know that their site says taurine is in it, but my understanding is it isn't enough and that someone on the label there's a disclaimer stating so.

Oh! I also leave dry food throughout the day, small amounts enough for him to finish it within a day so it doesn't get left out for too long. I give him a mixture of Royal Canin Fit 32 and Indoor 27. This is the diet that was proposed to me by the adopter.

Ok that's much better! I'm not familiar with either of those but I know Royal Canin gets good reviews around here.

It could be so many reasons why he continues to throw up.It could be a difference in water he's drinking, an allergy to one of the foods you're feeding, or an underlying illness.  Is he losing weight? I'm assuming he's been seen by a vet recently?  If so, did they run any tests? Do you trust that vet? Can you go for a second opinion?

I haven't sent him to the vet yet after this incident though.. He just had a major check up a few months ago and everything was okay. He doesn't seem lethargic, he isn't losing weight and he is eating everything well. I try to put lesser food these few days though.

I suppose there are so many reasons! >< Thanks for helping me raise them up. As he seems to be doing well physically and in his behaviour. Do you think I should monitor for a few more days or should I just get him straight to the vet now? The vet I go to is one of the best in Singapore (I feel and think so!), he saved my other stray kitty when most vets said the odds were slim he gave me a 90% chance of survival. But of course will be open to a second opinion.

I do agree about cutting down on the fish content - if he doesn't like chicken could you get a beef or lamb flavor? Too much fish can cause problems. But one of my cats vomits of she her favourite foods too fast - she just gobbles at them and then it all comes up 20 minutes later. I try to slow her down by feeding smaller meals more often, or even by taking her food away when she has eaten half and giving her the rest 30 minutes later. Or some people put the food in raised dishes, on a little stand or something so the cat has to stretch to eat and doesn't swallow so fast. As for the cockroach, the cat may well have licked it and it could cause gagging and vomiting if he had just eaten. I would try some of these things, monitor him carefully and if the problems continue or you notice anything else abnormal, then go to the vet. You are obviously a very observant kitty mom!
