Hi, I'm wondering how many ml of passiflora is safe to give a cat. I have a cat who is quite stressed since the new year party we had in our house, and I want to make him relax a bit. I've used passiflora for him in the past, it's one of the few things that work on him. But I dont remember the exact dosage, I think it was 1 ml. The passiflora syrup I have contains 750 mg per 5 ml, so do you think it's all right to give 1 ml twice a day?

I am not a fan of herbal treatments on cats. While I use some myself I can monitor my own reaction and say how much is enough whereas my cat can't tell me. The other issue is that some of those herbal oils are more oil than herbal.

Another way to calm your cat is to trigger grooming behavior by putting some (put it on a spoon and just lightly touch the paw to transfer some) human meat baby food on a paw. The cat should start cleaning the paw off and continue grooming. It calms the cat by triggering a natural process that calms them.

If you have had past experience with passiflora and want to use it then I would go half of what you are thinking is the right dosage. It's better to use too little than too much. I couldn't find any dosage information myself in a quick search and have no medical background to say what is safe. If it has dosage recommendations for humans you can divide that by 150 (assuming that is average human body weight) and multiply by your cats wieght would be a logical way to figure out a dosage. But human and cat systems work differently so that could be off. Part of the reason I am against herbal treatments for cats. Its very hard to make calls on not only how it is actually affecting the cat but how much to affect the cat.

Best of luck and I hope it works out for you.

Hi Kieka, thank you for your reply. Unfortunately I cant use this grooming method, though it sounds good, because his problem is that he overgrooms obsessively when he is stressed, I'm trying to make him stop because he hurts his skin. By the way it is nor oil but a solution which contains only water and passiflora. I gave him 5 cc (less than 1 ml) yesterday and he feels better today, I don't think I'll give him more if he stays like this.

I strongly believe in asking your vet before using any supplements. It's not natural for cats to consume fruit and herbs and there may be long-term risks associated with such supplements. Also, it's best to use only preparations made specifically for pets, and these should have the dosage clearly indicated on them.

If it's affecting an animal in any way, it usually means there's some interaction with the pet's biochemistry, just like there would be with medication. With medication, at least we know what active ingredients it contains and what the concentrations are. Much riskier with alternative/herbal stuff, IMO. Natural certainly does not mean safe, especially when cats are concerned.

Hi Anne, I've used passiflora (the same one) for him in the past because I've been advised by a vet. Of course I dont give him anything human grade without consulting an expert.

Excellent! Maybe you can ask the vet again about dosages?

I'll ask him, when I'll be able to reach him. The reason why I asked the dosage here was that I wasn't able to ask and it was kind of urgent. But fortunately my cat is better now.

Something like that where the concentration and potancy can vary so much depending on brand you are using its really hard for anyone other than a vet to help. I'm sorry we couldn't help more. I am glad he is doing better now.

1cc=1ml. Did you mean you gave him 0.5 cc?

Hello,

Valerian does not work for me or my cat, but passiflora does and I think it will work for him too but obviously not with my tablets. What passiflora product are you using please and where do I purchase it? Is there not a cat tablet containing passiflora one can buy? My cat is is over 7 kilos so would you please confirm the weight and dosage you are giving your cat with the vet's approval.

Many thanks!
