Hello everyone! Seeking for help and recommendations on what to feed my kitty Token. Token used to have a great appetite and used to eat everything until 2 months ago. He throws up every day and I thought it was because he ate too fast which he did. He became diabetic about year and half ago due to an steroid shot that was supposed to help with some sinus infection that he had going on. He had insulin for a few months until the steroids were out of his body and his sugar level became normal. He was a big cat (21 lbs) so the vet recommended to switch him from dry to wet food only and started to feed him less which we did.

He started to lick everywhere in his body constantly in October, he wouldn't stop grooming at all times. I thought that was weird so we went to the vet. Then I realized he was down to 12.5 lbs (I figured it was due to the change of food, the exercise he was getting since we moved from an apartment to a house and the fact that he will vomit all the time). The vet did a blood work on him and everything came back normal. They prescribed him Benadryl for the "allergy" and some Clavamox. They also said to change him back to dry food since his weight was now normal an that might help with the vomit. Well he loved the hard food for a while but then didn't want to eat it anymore and started to vomit more constantly and started to vomit blood.

We went back to the vet and they did x rays on him and didn't found any masses or tumors. They said the intestine was maybe a little ticker than normal so he thought maybe he had an ulcer and possibly IBD. They gave us carafate and some kind of acid reducer. The carafate helped at the beginning but then he started to vomit again with blood and I noticed he started to eat his litter. Back to vet we went, down to 11.5 lbs and they didn't know what was going on and pretty much said they couldn't help us anymore.

We went to another vet to try to get answers and blood work was performed again (early December) and Token's results were scary. He was really anemic, dehydrated and had an infection going on. They said to keep doing the carafate, give us a food stimulant, prilosec, clavamox to fight the infection and he needed to start eating prescribed wet food for ID (Hill's brand). This worked for a week and he was still throwing up but it was all just hairballs. His stools were hard but dark brown almost black, probably because of the ulcer.

2 weeks ago he started to throw up blood again, we went to the vet again and last week he got blood work done again. His anemia improved considerable. From 16 red blood cell count to 28. However, the infection is not going away. His white cell count increased too. It seems that the Clavamox is not doing anything probably because he keeps throwing up. He doesn't have an issue with diarrhea (he never had), his stools are still dark brown but the constant vomiting is not helping him. He doesn't throw up right after eating like he used to but now it's overnight. Every day I wake up to go give him his medicine, I found some vomit. For the last few days, it doesn't seem to be blood, just food or bile (it's brown color).

He hasn't been wanting to eat the prescribed food for over a week now not even if I put chicken breast in it like vet recommended. The vet keeps telling me to force the food on him but he wouldn't even smell it now. He wants to eat the Fancy Feast that my other cat eats but I know it can't be good for him. I have tried different kind of grain free food and he would like it for 1 day and then doesn't want to do anything with it anymore. Right now the only thing he wants is some dry food (Hill's) which I have been giving him so he doesn't starve but he is not eating much at the time. The vet said it was not good to keep switching his food but I don't know what to do. He is also getting B12 shots right now which seem to help since he is a little more energetic. He didn't vomit last night and I was very happy but as soon as I was going to feed him, he vomited again (all brown liquid). The vet suggested to hospitalize him to get IV antibiotics and fluids but he said it would only make sense if we decide to take him to a internal medicine doctor afterwards to try to treat whatever he has but that will be about $3,000 plus the $1,000 for the hospitalization. He said that if we don't want to do that, he can get him on steroids to see if that helps but I'm afraid that the steroids will cause him to become diabetic again.

Has anyone had something like this happen to their cat? I thought he might be allergic to some kind of food at first and probably the licking cause the hairballs issues too but not sure what could have caused the ulcers. Any ideas what I can feed him that won't affect the infection he has going on? I was reading duck and rabbit meals can be good for IBD cats but he barely ate the rabbit and he vomited the duck meal seconds after eating. I also heard raw food can be a good option but not sure if that will cause more issues with his infection.

Thank you!
