One of my 9 year old family cats was diagnosed with early CKD at her last appt (she also had a UTI, but the vet thinks its more than that - we need to schedule her follow up, but she's going to be retested when we go again).

I researched good food for kidney kitties and found two alternatives to the unhealthy prescription diets that I was happy with (Soulistic Harvest Sunrise and Organix Turkey and Spinach), and we got those, but I'm the only one taking her CKD seriously. My parents are on board enough to buy the food, but I'm the only one that feeds it to her, and am having a hard time remembering to fit that into my schedule. She usually gets the wet food once a day, and then grazes on dry throughout the rest of the day (Nature's Variety Instinct Chicken that they were already on before her diagnosis).

Obviously the biggest thing is getting her only eating the wet food, but my dad has a morning treat ritual with the cats and our CKD kitty, Suzie, has always been the most into morning treats. So he doesn't want to give that up. I told him its not good for her, and that at least cutting back, if not stopping treats entirely, would have to happen for her kidneys, but he can't say no so she's still getting her grocery store treats.

I think they'd be willing to switch to healthier treats (especially if I can find some that aren't too expensive), but I'm having trouble finding any helpful information to figure out what treats would be acceptable.

We do have some Primal Turkey Nibs that I bought, but I don't really know how those are for CKD kitties either. I just know they have to be better than Temptations and whatnot.

Does anyone know of any acceptable treats for CKD cats?

(I am 22, currently living at home, but planning to move out in 5 - 8 mo. I need to get them into the habit of taking care of these things for Suzies health because I won't be able to do it forever.)

If you haven't already visit this site and look around. It's known as the "bible" for CKD. If you want to keep giving dry food (which I don't recommend) you should feed a low phos dry food, which is not what you're currently feeding. Tanya's site has a list, I think some of the lowest ones are Halo. She also has a list of low phos wet foods. What you want is low phos high protein. Weruva makes several good ones. Here's some links to low phos foods and good treats.

The best treats for any cat, CKD or not, are 100% freeze dried meat only treats. Some good brands are Whole Life, Bravo, Orijen (both the dog and cat treats are 100% meat only).

I don't offer my kitties a lot treats, but when I do, I use their dry kibble.  They don't eat a lot of dry food and it works well for us to do that. Kitties really don't need treats, but it's good to give them occasionally.

100% freeze dried meat treats are fine as long as they're 10% or less of the daily diet. They're just meat, so there's nothing bad about them. In fact they're good for cats. I use them as toppers to give my cats more variety in their meals and to entice them to eat. I don't know what it is about freeze dried meat but my cats go bananas for them.
