Good morning!
 And Happy Friday!

Rick and I are both off today.

Our question this morning deals with New Year's superstitions: What do you do on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day (if anything) to bring good luck for the New Year?

We have our little quirks:
  • About five minutes before midnight on NY Eve, I'll put an old pocketbook outside on the front door knob with a $1.00 bill and some change in it. Then after the ball drops, I go out and bring the pocketbook back inside the house. That way, the first thing I do is bring money into my house. My grandmother did that for as long as she was alive and I've done it more often than not for as long as I've had a house.
  • Rick and I haven't actually seen the ball drop in 45 years. As the countdown starts from 10, Rick and I kiss until the New Year comes in. We've done that every year since we've been married. (Don't laugh: One of Rick's cousins who got married the same year we did always kissed on NY Eve, too. Until that one year they didn't. And they got divorced the following year. So....I don't know, superstitious? Probably. Taking a chance? Nope!
     )
  • And of course, on New Year's Day, I always serve crock pot pork and sauerkraut for dinner. Another tradition that my grandmother kept to, as did my mom, and now me. It's supposed to bring good luck throughout the year. I found this on FB from one of Rick's cousins, who also does the pork and sauerkraut thing:   https://billypenn.com/2015/12/31/po...h-believe-its-your-luckiest-meal-of-the-year/
Whatever you do, have a safe New Year's Eve and I hope that 2017 is the best year for everybody!

the only thing i can think of is something i've done once or twice, which is to write down a goal for the year. then at the end of that year, take a look at what i wrote and see if that goal was accomplished. i don't usually do that now though, because my goals tend to be longer term ones and proceed at their own pace towards being accomplished.

I also do the old purse thing. It can't hurt!

Pork and sauerkraut are great together. Do you have a recipe for it? I eat sauerkraut straight from the jar.

I agree- I hope everyone has a safe New Year's Eve and I wish a happy, healthy and prosperous 2017 to EVERYONE.

Since I usually work New Years Eve I am usually to tired to stay up to see the ball drop, but for New Years day dinner we have Hoppin' John. That is what it is called in the south - black eyed peas cooked with ham and served over rice. Supposed to have one day of luck for every black eye  you eat.
I have had it every New Years day for as long as I can remember. I can't really say that it brings good luck but it never hurts to try!

It doesn't necessarily bring good luck but every year on New Year's Day for the past 30 years I call a former co-worker who left her job when she had her first child.  I was her temporary replacement and when she didn't return after her maternity leave I was promoted to her position. She trained me and we have remained friends ever since. We spend the morning on New Year's Day catching up on the past year since she doesn't live close by.

New Year's Eve we stay home, watch a movie and call it a night.

I don't do anything for luck, but I do have one tradition to start the year off right.  I pay all my bills and take care of all my paperwork. I tend to procrastinate on the latter so there is usually a big pile of it.   The first year I did this, I felt such a load off my mind that I've done it ever since.

My family and I cast tin, or otherwise known as Molybdomancy. it's a Finnish tradition (though I have been told it is also a tradition in other countries too, like parts of Germany). You melt metal, lead or tin, and then each individual tosses a spoonful into water. The resulting shape is then examined and interpreted, predicting future events in the upcoming year - good luck, love, money, travel, bad luck, sorrow, good health, etc the usual topics.

Otherwise methinks that is it! Other than trying to have positive thoughts

I stay home with the animals. I put the tv on in hopes of drowning the fireworks noise. Last year Tiger, Cally, + Peppy Dog all hid in the walk in closet of my roommate + best friend. I was honored to sit with them at midnight so I gave them treats + hugged them for the New Year.

I fix black eye peas + cabbage on Jan 1st. Not for good luck but because it is a custom.

Happy New Year. May all good things come to all.

Here is my traditional New Year's Eve:
  1. I send the kids to bed on time. (Last year we watched one of the kids countdowns on Netflix.
  2. DH falls asleep on the couch.
  3. I make appetizers or dips to enjoy alone (unless DH is awake still when they are finished)
  4. DH stumbles to bed after Midnight.
  5. I go to bed around 2am like normal.
I know; your all jealous or our super cool New Years!

Mine will be even more exciting.

DD will be in her room playing games online

I will be in the living room having a margarita or 3.  I may make some appetizers to munch on instead of dinner

The furkids will do the same thing they always do

I might watch the ball drop on Youtube if they are showing it there as I do not have TV service

My New Year's kiss will be one on top of Sophie's head if she decides to sit in my lap as she often does in the evenings

I will go to bed around 2 or so also as normal

Yeah I live large too.

Nothing much. Reading. playing online games. Cuddle with the cats. Sometimes I am asleep before midnight. Other times I am up all night.

I don't have anything I do for luck...and nothing special to eat..I usually just order pizza or make frozen tater tots n some other frozen treat-like breaded pepper poppers or other thing..chicken fingers.

I don't do anything special. Sometimes I will buy a can of black eye peas but I rarely get around to eating them. I think tomorrow night I will have Chinese food delivered.

Huh...think I'll try that pocketbook thing.  I have my can of black eyed peas ready to go, though.  One year, I got tricky and turned them into a sort of redneck hummus, and had it with chips and crackers.
