Hi folks!
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. Of course, it was very hard for me after losing Bandit at the end of November, but Skye has been a darling. She just turned 17 on December 8th.
For a long time, she was very content--I've been giving her cartrophan shots weekly for arthritis, and bupe when needed for pain and prednisone 1 x daily for inflammation of the pancreas(She is not symptomatic, but has a very high pancreatic enzyme count)
Last night, she must have woken me up every hour yowling. That's not like her. I gave her pain meds and she was very hungry, ate well, and was very cuddly---but just yowling a lot--and it carried into today too--very vocal. We have snow, so I had wondered if her arthritis was more painful and gave her a bit more bupe. But, the heartbreaking moment came when I figured she wanted to play (she did!) and I got a ribbon that has a tiny crafting flower at the end, a toy she's loved to play with for years. She quite enjoyed playing....until she stopped and looked into the hallway for Bandit to come. She then stopped playing and went into her new kitty bed and just looked so sad
I know that, on some days, when she'd howl, he'd go to see if she was ok. That was before he got sick obviously. I'm just wondering if, in her aged mental state, could she have just realized he's gone? It may have nothing to do with it, and since I gave her a large dose of bupe (I was giving VERY small doses which were working, but then gave her a quarter of her dose that is for pancreatitis) and she's been far more comfortable since/less vocal.
I'm going to see if she can pop to the vet tomorrow because she may have a UTI---she'd had some diarrhea (my bad, I gave her a wee bit too much peanut butter from my morning toast!), and I think she's a bit red on her tushie. I'd rather get her antibiotics just to be safe since we are going into a long weekend.
I know many of you have multiple kitties and have had them pass on.....did your other kitties notice the absence of the lost one? Skye and Bandit were never apart in the 17 years I had them----so Skye is now the lone kitty here...and I'm wondering if she's scared/lonely when I'm at work. I'm going to leave the Christmas lights on tonight as she is very comforted when they are on---which leads me to wonder if it's more of a confusion given the darkeness----I had her at the vet last month and she has the start of cataracts in both eyes.
She's been very quiet, cuddly and good appetite since the bigger bupe dose....which leads me to wonder if she was more in pain. Ugh!
Thanks for any input and suggestions to keep her comfy when she's having troubles? The vocalizing isn't new--she's been doing this now, mostly at night, for about 2 yrs or so. But never for that length of time.(Every 45 mins)
She's just been my rock and I do NOT want her in any discomfort/pain.
NB: She can't use medicam due to being on prednisone, and I'm leery of using medicam due to her high pancreatic levels--if she had full blown pancreatitis, I could not use prednisone until removing her from medicam and having her free of that for 2 weeks, so that's sadly not an option, but I know medicam is a better med for arthritis...
