Well, my ten year old buff orange tabby, Hades, was diagnosed with (late stage?) CRF yesterday. His creatinine was >13.6 (off the IDEXX chart), his BUN was >130 (also off the chart), and his phosphorus was >16.1 (again, off the charts).

We were hopeful that subq fluids would be enough to buy him some more comfortable time, and the vet also gave a pain injection (the injection form of buprenex). In addition, the vet gave an injection of cerenia, which I have used on kittens in the past with great success.

But Hades reacted poorly to the cerenia. He has been drooling since it was administered, and has no appetite. He has not vomited, but it certainly did less then I hoped. I will try pepcid ac later and hope the cerenia wears off soon.

We gave 150ml of LRS yesterday, and 100ml today so far, but he has yet to perk up again.  He has been totally uninterested in attention, which is quite unlike him.

I gave him about 4 ml of baby food through a syringe, which he protested by drooling more and tilting his head to strange angles. I worried for the state of his brain, but his eyes reacted normally to light.

He is hiding under the desk right now, and appears to be asleep, but not closing his eyes (seems to be a bad sign).

I don't know how long I should try to treat him. I feel as though the vet should have offered IV fluids, but they were in a hurry and were rushing through the exam. I also feel as though the pain medication was likely unnecessary, though she said his kidneys seemed painful upon palpation.

I will include images of his bloodwork and the invoice so you all know what he was given.

Join this group. Post your labs there and they'll give advice. They are super smart and know their stuff about CKD and will give you great advice. Don't give up on him yet you can def control this, but you've got to get those numbers down he must feel absolutely awful.

There's a lot you can do to enhance his life, but getting those numbers down is key.  I would also suggest a second opinion as it doesn't sound like your vet took enough time to explain things or to offer a treatment plan.
