Hey All!

Do you have any information regarding  feeding amounts for a siberian cat  at  different parts of their life?  I currently have a 6 mo  old kitten and feed her 3 times a day. I know on the food label  it advertises a certain amount, but I have been told this is grossly exagerated to sell more food.

Basically, what I am looking for is a chart detailing feeding amounts from a 6mo  old siberian kitten  into adulthood (per meal).

Thank you!

Dietary needs for a Siberian are not different than other cats. You'll want to feed the appropriate amount for her size once she is full grown. For a kitten, though, you want to feed unlimited food since they are still growing. Are you feeding wet and dry food?

Ive heard conflicting things on the unlimited amounts.  My vet said 3 times a day, as has other research I have read.  I feed her both wet and dry food (alternate).

I usually give her about a quarter cup per meal (she is 5lbs) or half a can.

Yes. Smaller cats have smaller tummies and need small meals more often. Leaving some dry food down and feeding wet food meals is usually a good solution.

Wont she just leave the dry then and wait for the wet?  Ive noticed if I  go a day or two feeding just wet then switch to dry, she wont eat much of the dry.

Eating primarily wet is fine. She will nibble on the dry when she gets hungry in between meals.

We feed our cats wet 2x daily, breakfast and supper, and they have dry available 24/7.  Cats tend to have preferences... believe it or not, some cats don't like to eat the wet food.  But it seems all our cats, no matter what their preference, will eat both.

its just frustrating how little info is out there for how much to feed per lb. at certain ages.   I just really dont want her to get obesse or unhealthy as that would be my fault.  Equally, i dont want her to be hungry and underweight.

And as for amounts, we usually do 1/2 can morning and night per kitty... and like your kitty, sometimes they don't eat quite all of it, and sometimes they devour it immediately.  If you are going with half a can and she seems satisfied with that, that's what I would stick with.  I know feeding recommendations are based on age and weight so I don't know what the proper recommendation is, we just pretty much feed them what it takes to make them happy... and healthy.

If your cat is active, and maintaining a healthy weight, then I think you are feeding correctly, if your cat starts getting too fat, then you can decide how to handle it.  3 of our 4 cats are actually on the skinny side, even with free feeding.

Siberian cats actually grow and mature much more slowly than the average cat (5 years to become fully grown) so you will need to keep in mind that she will be going through growth spurts on and off for a long time, and her appetite will definitely vary while still growing.  I don't have actual experience with them so I don't know if sticking to a kittens feeding schedule for 5 years is the right thing to do, but she won't be anywhere near a full grown adult by age 1 like most cats.

that is a good point as well.  Do you think half a can in the monring, and half at nigh with 1/4 cup dry out during the day is good?

what size can do you feed? if it's the larger 5.5-6 oz cans, I'd say yes.  If it's the smaller 3 oz cans, you might need to add an extra can if she's willing to eat it.  Is she really active/energetic?

Dietary needs for Siberian are different than other cats. We have a 9 month old neutered male named Capricious who is an extremely well built 10 pound kitten. They do not process carbs at all and it will make them sick typically the runs. They also as previously stated grow the first 5 years of their lives. Many breeders suggest you let them decide how much they'll eat during this time by feeding a high quality meat protein food a couple times a day or dry food on free feed. You don't have a small cat. The worlds largest Siberian was over 25 pounds. Many neutered males reach 20 pounds.

Siberian cats do not have different dietary needs, other than perhaps needing more food because they are larger.

Yup we heard you the first time. You don't believe Siberians require any special diet. I believe I'll stick with dozens of breeders and veterinarians.
