I have a TNR reformed feral boy who has been living in my house for over two years now. I was feeding Natural Balance dry and Fancy Feast Gravy with no problems at all. Two weeks after having houseguests, Evander started vomiting and had diarrhea. He was sick like this for two days, and then the urine clumps disappeared from his box. I knew this was not a good sign, so I took him to the emergency clinic because it was Christmas Eve morning. He had everything done as everyone has described, and was there for two nights. He would not eat while there, but he was urinating, so they discharged him. Now, it is Thursday, he has had his last dose of pain killer. He is not in the box as much as he was, but his little pee balls are larger. Should I be worried that he is not going as much? He doesn't seem to be straining at all. Last night while man handling him to get that syringe in his mouth, he peed on the counter. I would appreciate any guidance as to what to expect during recovery, especially with both medications ending today. We spent $3000 on this guy over Christmas weekend, and I don't think my husband is going to be so understanding if I try to take him in again. I am frantically doing everything I can to avoid euthanasia.

Throw out that dry food. The key to urinary health is water, water, and more water. If you don't already invest in some water fountains and add extra water to his wet food. I'd probably try to get him on the FF classic without gravy and as their gravy varieties have wheat gluten in them, and carbs can trigger urinary issues. As long as he's urinating that's a good sign. large pee balls aren't necessarily bad it may just mean he's drinking more water (hopefully).  It can take some time for things to get back to normal so just keep an eye on him and do as much as you can to increase his moisture intake. You can ever make some tuna water by adding tuna juice to water to entice him to drink more.

Thanks so much for the input missmimz! I brought a case of the Royal Canin canned urinary diet from the vet and I have been mixing it with water, tuna broth and chicken broth. I wasn't aware of the wheat in the gravy variety of the Fancy Feast. I have been using a little bit mixed into the Royal Canin (because he doesn't seem to like it), but I'll get some of the original variety. No more dry food for him. He is eating really well. I was thinking he'd be more alert off of the pain killer. He seems just exhausted.

So now Evander is having a herpes flare up with wet sneezes, runny nose, etc. Vet says not to worry unless he starts coughing and/or has green or yellow discharge coming from eyes or nose. I didn't even know about cat herpes. Cats are way more complicated than dogs....
