Hello, I'm very new here but I was wondering if anyone had advice regarding my 15 year old cat Zippy. He is recovering from a bad virus, despite having had his jabs he contracted something which made him sneeze, his eyes gunked up, his breathing laboured, lost appetite, and pernicious of all it gave him terrible diarrhoea which he is still suffering from. He's been to the vet several times, once he was on a drip as he'd dehydrated so much. The vet had given him a couple of anti-emetic injections after which he found his appetite briefly and a vitamin B12 jab.
He's still painfully thin and hardly eating plus he has diarrhoea still although his poo isn't as foul smelling. I've put all his favourite foods out but as bland as I can, cooked salmon and chicken and some of his normal canned food but although he wants to eat I think the nausea or sore tummy is preventing him. He hasn't vomited at all during his illness and there is no blood and mucus in his poo. Does anybody have any ideas how to get him to eat and stop his diarrhoea? I could take him again to the vet but he finds it stressful and although he is insured they want the money up front and my funds are going.

Did your vet run blood work? 15 year old cats are prone to both kidney disease and hyperthyrodism which can cause some of these symptom. When cats have a URI they can't smell their food, and when they can't smell their food they wont eat. Try offering some meat baby food NO onions or garlic, or some poached chicken breast, or even tuna.

Hi MissMims, yes they ran his bloods and the only thing they found was that his white blood cell count was high which suggests his body is fighting an infection of some sort. He definitely had some sort of virus. He hasn't had much diarrhoea today (I'm in the UK so several hours in front of you time wise) and has settled down to sleep on his bed, but he hasn't eaten much. I've got big bowls of water everywhere for him. I'm taking him back to the vet tomorrow, a good friend is footing the bill and I will pay him back when I can. Baby food is a great idea, yes I know onions and garlic are harmful to cats so I'll choose one without. He loves chicken so I'll get some of that too.
Thank you for getting back to me,I'll see what the vet suggests.

Hello Justine, they gave me a diagnosis of Inflammatory Bowel Disease which just about described his symptoms. My cat has since passed away I'm sad to say, 2 weeks now, but he was given steroid tablets and an appetite stimulant which helped and I put him on as grain-free diet as possible. Besides the last few days he was happy and ate his dinner (he lived for food ☺). I wish you lots of luck with your puss, IBD is very common with older cats and can have so many causes, it seems that with mine it was the virus that set it off.

Take care won't you
