One of the Christmas cards I got these year had the lyrics to "My Favorite Things" repurposed for cat life -- something like:

"Couches and love seats with claw marks and scratches / Carpets and blankets with big urine patches / Sweaters and t-shirts torn up to strings / These WERE a few of my favorite things!"

And of course, pictures of cats singing the song lol.

It turned out to be appropriate, because I came home on Dec. 23 and found my guitar on the floor. My beloved, midnight-blue Les Paul. And the neck of the guitar ended with no headstock.

At first I'm like, "That looks weird..." And then I took a closer look and, sure enough, the neck of the guitar was snapped right below the headstock. LJ (short for 'Little Jerk,' which is what I call Buddy sometimes when he gets bratty) must have knocked it down, and the guitar must have landed on the headstock itself for it to break like that.

So the tally, in 2 1/2 years, is this:

- A heavy mirror with a wood frame, pulled down off the wall by Bud when he was a kitten. I still can't comprehend the physics of that act.

- My leather office chair, which is now more of a claw-textured office chair.

- The screen door leading to my balcony, which I now have to physically obstruct with a piece of wood so Bud can't claw it more than he has, or continue using it as a scratcher.

- Several plants

- Several Christmas ornaments

- My keyboard synthesizer, which is now missing several knobs.

- My remote controls, all of which now have little cat's teeth gauges in them.

- My Les Paul

So...what are your casualties of having a cat? Furniture, collectibles, household items, parts of your house or apartment itself, bedding, personal items, musical instruments, clothing...what has your little rascal destroyed?

So sorry about your guitar, @Plan!  I'm happy to say I have not lost anything that nice.

My destroyer cat is Diamond.  I have learned that anything that he can reach might get mangled.

A ceramic antique TV lamp I bought because I liked the dragon on it smashed when it fell six feet to the floor.  (How did he get up there?!?!)

A lamp with a metal shade that is not destroyed but is in sad shape.  It was knocked over on my head while I was sleeping!

The pad on my Nordictrack is shredded.

Every dry food bag he could get to is shredded.  (Once again, how did he get up there!?!?)

Any bag of supplements or snacks he could get to, also shredded.

He likes to push mice and remotes on the floor.  There are only so many times they can hit the floor without damage.  I keep an extra mouse, just in case.

More than a few CD cases have broken when pushed to the floor, though he is not the only one who does this!

He knocked my lava lamp over and it fell 50 inches to the floor, but it did not break!

He has calmed down, but he still gets a wild hair sometimes.

But he's a cute kitty.
So I just put up with it.

Our first 2 kittens destroyed 2 floor plants that they used as litter boxes.
Needless to say we have absolutely no plants anymore.

Another cat jumped up to our dresser, got his foot stuck in an antique wash bowl & pitcher, and it came tumbling down in pieces.

A different cat who was not the most graceful knocked over an antique stained glass lamp which fell and damaged the coffee table.

Our most mischievous cat totally demolished 2 Queen Anne chairs as well as the cord to our patio blinds which open and closed them.

Wow, I guess I'm in for a treat[emoji]128576[/emoji] I have only had my little guy for a month so not much damage yet. We didn't decorate the Christmas tree this year because as soon as it went up, he went in. I tried putting lights on but that only lasted an hour before he started chewing them. So we had a bare tree for Christmas this year. Lol
A lamp he knocked off the table in the middle of the night scaring the crap out of me, I thought someone broke into our home.
A picture frame that he decided to jump up and knock off the wall.
so far that's all he's done but I'm positive the list will grow by next month!!

I'm not sure where to start, lol. Well from my early childhood I remember my two cats Garfield and Night knocking over the Christmas tree, shattering many irreplaceable bulbs and ornaments, we tied the tree to the wall after that, lol. The cat I had when I was in college destroyed a chair belonging to the ladies I was renting a room from, as well as decided to eat 2 plants. My current cats are by far the most destructive though,  countless cords chewed up when they were young, posters (one was from Rascal, when I was away for a week. I left her, and the rest of the pets, home with my husband, she apparently freaked), shoe insoles (one resulting in emergency surgery to remove foam from her gut), dishes knocked to the floor and smashed, window screens broken, they broke the first fake Christmas tree I had, couches and chairs all have claw marks, one or two lamps knocked down and broken. I think the worse in terms of cost though was the carpeting in one of the spare rooms, we got CJ spayed and had her all set up in a side room to recover. Apparently she thought she was trapped forever and over the course of one night tore up about 1/4-1/3 of the carpeting in the room. The door opens inward into the room causing it to catch on the carpet from that point on, so we had to tear up the whole thing, and replaced it with cheap sticky tile. The cats peeled up some of the tiles so then finally we replaced that with vinyl flooring. More indirectly my cats like to knock things on the floor for the dogs to chew up, they didn't destroy it, they got someone else to do it for them.

Is he the handsome little dude in the photo? See, that's how they get you! They destroy something valuable or sentimental, and you can't even stay mad because then they look at you and they're all cute. They're looking at you like, "See how cute I am? You can't be mad at me. I chewed a signed copy of your favorite book, but look at how cute I am!"

Plan, yes that's my little guy Jinx in the photo. He definitely knows he can get away with anything and I won't stay mad. Your right, how can you look at their little faces with their big round eyes and stay mad? Ha ha This photo is a great example of his "but I love you mommy" face.

Surprisingly i dont think they have destroyed much. They have aged some of my items though. Like my bedsheets and cell phone chargers. I dont have that many nice things so its not a big issue haha. But i do keep my closet door closed because my naughty little cat will scratch and play with my clothes if i didnt. :)

Both of my cats are pretty well behaved. Casper especially since he's older and isn't as agile any longer.

The only thing I can remember being ruined was due to Cocoabean. I had a pair of hand made stained glass votive holders (expensive, was a gift, one of a kind) sitting on the fireplace mantel. I thought they were well out of reach but apparently, she must have jumped up to a nearby piece of furniture and then, somehow got herself on the mantle.  The one thing disturbed was one of the candle holders - fell to the floor and wound up bending the leading holding the stained glass together.  I tried to bend it back in to shape but was afraid I'd wind up cracking the whole thing.

Needless to say they were put into my dining room hutch.  I don't keep anything of value/breakable out any more because of that!

Honeybee on my lap, music playing in background
Honeybee has knocked down my favorite painting. It's hung next to her new cat tree- she hadn't climbed up on it until 2 weeks went by. And she must have flicked the picture with her tail and it came crashing down-I too thought someone broke in in the middle of the day.

Pumpkin face used to skim everything on the counter onto the floors when she was a kitten. Nothing was immune. It wasn't uncommon to wake up and all pens and keys to be scattered around the floor.

I don't have anything breakable on shelves or tables but I do have a few things on the breakfast nook that she could knock over but so far she hasn't touched anything.

They all scratched the heck out of my couch and ottoman which we try to cover with sheets but Honeybee does it when she wants Jon to wake up and give her treats because she knows he will call out- "knock it off trouble" and of course she hops up on his chest/back meowing and swishing her tail. She sits pretty with large eyes and softly meows until the treat bag opens.

Other times she comes running when he opens the treat bag for Pumpkin face-otherwise she ignores us other than to sleep on us at night-I ignore her-deep sleeper that I just pet her in my sleep and she curls up and makes biscuits on her blanket then passes out...so I can't stay mad at her because she makes me laugh with her naughtiness.

Sophie is the one who goes through things in my house.

She:

Broke a lamp by pushing it off the stereo cabinet it was on. it landed on the TV stand and shattered.

Broke a clay change holder that DD made for DH when she was in elementary school. This was pushed off the same stereo cabinet.

Pulled a full set of curtains including the curtain rods down off the wall during a particularly energetic bout of the zoomies. The curtain rod was bent in half when I got home

Managed to get behind the dryer (which is in a closet behind a set of bi-fold doors along with the washer) then could not get out so I had to pull the dryer out which ripped the duct work that I had to replace. She still tries to get back there whenever I do laundry. I have to watch her like a hawk.

Has knocked several pictures off the walls during her zoomie bouts which fortunately survived (barely)

i won't put up a Christmas tree with her. She'd go through it like a furry wrecking ball.

My four cats have:

Scratched the sofa

Amber destroyed two bags of flour, opening the kitchen cupboard, pulling it down, before dragging it into the dining room and ripping it open.

Destroyed multiple toys, especially catnip mice.

One cat stocking containing catnip, Socks found it before Christmas, and had a catnip party at 3am.

Chewed open four pouches of cat food, before I started hiding them in a cupboard they cant open.

Ate half a bag of dry food-my stepmom bought it for her cat, her cat didn't like it and the box was broken, so she sealed it in a zip lock freezer bag and gave it to me. I put the bag down, went to the toilet, when I came back the bag was ripped open and the cats were eating it.

Small bag of cat hair I was saving for a craft project after reading Crafting with Cat Hair.

Lost half the Christmas tree ornaments, and knocked the tree down within 20 minutes of it being up.

Pulled one of the curtains down, youre not a kitten anymore and are too fat to climb the curtains now.

I had bought some catnip toys to go into a gift box for a local no kill shelter. it was still in the grocery bag on the kitchen floor. Sophie likes to poke through the bags to see if there is anything in there she wants. She found one of the toys and claimed it. She was rolling all over the floor with the toy between her front legs- cardboard still attached. She chewed the cardboard up so it couldn't really be gifted. She got that one and I had to go get another one for the shelter cats.

I haven't really had a lot of damage from cats.

I have a lovey little couch that wasn't scratched for almost two years, but one of my cats is very convinced now that it is for scratching since we moved. I think it's because it's now quite close to the cat tree, but there's really not another good place to put it, and no other place for the cat tree with a nice window view, so I've just decided to accept it and reupholster eventually.

Other than that the only thing I can think of is some mittens I dug out this morning which had clearly been chewed on with some vigor. All of my cats are super crazy about natural wool and are all about sitting on but also licking/biting it.

Over the years my cats have:

- Shredded an arm chair to pieces.

- Shredded a couch and matching love seat into a snarly mess.

- Gotten into a spraying contest and destroyed the carpet.

- Broke several terra cotta pots and a couple of the plants within.

- Chewed open too many bags of bread to count.

- Devoured the corners of over 20 paperback book covers.

Fortunately I didn't lose any musical instruments.
I'd need a good long time to recover from that.

My cats have mostly destroyed the carpets in our home and chairs. Despite having a scratch pad, for some reason, everything else was more fun to scratch. Felix likes to knock things off of tables too. I mean, anything at all. FOR NO REASON.

The worst thing Felix has ruined from me is my Nokia C3. It was a few years ago but I told him he couldn't go in my bedroom. I chased him out. Took a shower and when I came out and grabbed my phone, my hand went into something squishy. He pooped all over it which rendered the phone useless since poop got into the creases and on the buttons. I'll never forget that.

The girls are more calm in my experience. The boys cause more trouble.

My cats have been pretty well behaved.

Robbie jumped up on the counter and knock off my radio and broke it.

Buddy would get mad at me and run over and start scratching my wall paper. He was the love of my life.

Most of the stuff in my house gets trashed by Hiro AKA Destructor Kitty.

This is him.

He has broken countless bowls and dishes, killed every plant I ever brought into the house, even managed to chew up all the cacti and kill the roses I was growing outside by peeing on them. He smashed a computer monitor by knocking it off the desk.

(My fault, I thought one of those Bird Videos for Cats would keep him quiet.)

He has learnt how to open the cupboard doors and can tear open packets of food and get into Tuperware, so no food is safe from him.

He's such a lovely boy though, we forgive him for everything he does.
