Here are some pix of me and my new Western trained horse, Texane. I do not have her home yet - she is still under training at the ranch, where I am riding her as often as I can.

She is a Fjord pony, the same breed as my Freja, whom I lost last year, but slightly smaller and more stocky, as she has been used mainly as a driving pony. She is getting better to ride all the time and is really good natured and willing to learn.

She's beautiful. Congratulations.
  I've always loved horses, but don't have much chance to be around them, let alone actually own one.

She's a beautiful horse Jenny. I love her two-tone mane. Will it grow any longer than that or do Fjord ponies have short manes?

I've never ridden Western style. I learnt how to ride in the UK and Japanese style is similar to Mongolian style. Wooden saddles that you have to stand up in to canter.

(Makes it easier to use your sword.
 )

Do you have to sit or rise to trot and canter? Does she neck rein?

The horse behind her is sticking his tongue out! I think he wanted a carrot too.

I am growing her mane out. She had it cropped short in a sort of Mohican style for driving. It should be long and striped, very beautiful, but that will take a few months.

I learned to ride English style and did that most of my life, except when I lived in California, when I did some Western for fun. And you do not rise.at all at trot or canter. So when my knees went and at first I thought I was going to have to give up, I was amazed when I found a Western ranch near here. It is very popular in France for pleasure riding and so much more comfortable for us elder citizens. But it is quite difficult to transfer the technique - so much goes totally against instinct! Neck reining is a big part, but the emphasis is on controllng the horse with your seat and legs and keeping a long rein most of the time.

She's going to look stunning with a long stripy mane.

Western style sounds very comfortable. For Japanese style you're supposed to stand up to canter, but I feel very unsafe doing that. I still sit, so I feel like I'm in control and not about to face-plant over the horses shoulders.

I'd like to try Western style one day.

Western riding developed for working horses, so that cowboys could both use their hands for roping cattle and stay for up to 9/10 hours a day in the saddle, literally sleeping in it upright if necessary. Done properly, it is very comfortable for both horse and rider, but at the same time very precise in its movements and aids. Western horses can do things that only top dressage riders can do with their horses. Watch a video of a good cutting horse at work separating out a calf from a herd, and you will be amazed
