I respect your choice to free-feed, but I'm not sure I agree with the approach, and the inconsistency of amounts eaten at various times, the majority of food eaten late hours of the night - just humor me and put yourself in that situation - you know how you feel if you're home for a weekend relaxing but eating sporadically, too much at this point, too little at that point, your digestive system and bowel habits change considerably in just 24 hours.

I did not say sub-q fluids cause sarcoma - I said not to worry about a sarcoma, the theory is that other injections besides vaccines could be potential research, there is some evidence that other injections can cause inflammatory response at an injection site (injections with other substances) - it has yet to be studied extensively.

I respectfully ask, why do you think a frozen steel needle is comfortable for a cat?  Would you be comfortable if your physician set you up for an IV by using a frozen needle?

Probiotics are being studied extensively in human and veterinary medicine - the effectiveness/necessity is being questioned in both.  I'm not saying you can't use it, I'm saying it may be unnecessary and to ask the vet.  It's one of those things like l-lysine, chondroitin, glucosamine - new research is discovering everything we thought had beneficial effects when in fact, we've been wrong.  This isn't a bad thing, it teaches us to discard the old for newer, better, safer medicine.

From all my reading and in discussion with my vet, free feeding is the way to go for IBD cats. Too much food at one junction can cause regurgitation. I know myself, that if I eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day, I feel better. I is just one of those things that I think we will have to agree to disagree on.. I do appreciate your trying to help.

For a cat, nighttime is not the same as it is for a human. Yes, humans do sleep during the night. Cats sleep all the time, whether day time or night time.. and cats are much more active at night.. That is why a lot of people who have just adopted a cat, will have problems sleeping because their cat is so active at night. That is when they roam around. Night feeding does not bother me at all.. another agree to disagree...

I did not say sub-q fluids cause sarcoma - I said not to worry about a sarcoma, the theory is that other injections besides vaccines could be potential research, there is some evidence that other injections can cause inflammatory response at an injection site (injections with other substances) - it has yet to be studied extensively.

I honestly have ask you why you think a sub-q needle insertion is going to possibly cause a reaction; which could, cause an inflammation which; could possibly  lead to a sarcoma? Sub-Q's have been done for many years on countless numbers of cats. I have never heard of any of them coming down with a sarcoma.. Why would you even mention it? or think about it? I am certain that if there was any probability of that happening, there would be a widespread Bulletin to all the Vets warning them about this risk, and the practice of inserting any needle into a cat would come with a disclaimer or warning to the pet owner.

Respectfully, if you feel there is a risk associated with sub-q's or any type of injection; perhaps you could start your own study and publish the results.. I am certain the results would be an eye-opener to everyone...

I respectfully ask, why do you think a frozen steel needle is comfortable for a cat?  Would you be comfortable if your physician set you up for an IV by using a frozen needle?

I do not know the answer to that.. I have never had that experience.. but cold does make sense.. perhaps applying and ice pack to the area before needle insertion would even be helpful.. same thought process....

Artie has been on probiotics for a couple years now. He has never had a bad effect to that.. I am not about to tempt fate with something I cannot prove.

Thank you for you comments.. and for your help.

but I honestly feel we just need to agree to disagree.....

Morning @Artiemom  - seems to me like you can use a Cup O Kitty this morning.

picture is not mine, found it on the web, too cute to pass up.  Thought it was a nice way to end the week. xoxo

I'm really hoping your hvac is finished in a timely manner.  We had a light dusting here in the city, nothing major either.  As I said, and again, I know it's hard, but let us take some worry off your shoulders and enjoy this weekend with Sweet Artie.

Give Artie a big hug from his Auntie Hope. Warmest regards always.

Remember, Hopes my name & Inspiration's my game. lol

Good Morning Artiemom and hope you have a good day even with the new install-hope they do it quickly and get your heating working well!
  I second what foxeycat said!
TGIF, hope the noise level to work on the heating system isn't too bad for Artie's sake and yours.  Hugs to both of you.

I'd rather find one of those two in my coffee cup than coffee any day!

I second all of this. Hopefully they get everything fixed up as quickly as possible without causing sweet little Artie any stress.

Please feel free to give that darling boy some hugs and kisses from me too.

Good luck with that HVAC exchange!  When they finally did mine, my electric bill reduced by 15%,  Hope yours does as well!

Give Artie a chinskritch for me, and sending a hug to you!

Artie has been getting hugs and kisses all morning long! We were kind of trapped inside my bedroom. At least I could go out, but Mr Noisy Pants, had to stay in.. Oh, he tried running between my legs, but I was on to his antics..

At one point, I was in the kitchen making a cup of tea, I could hear him howling through the bedroom door, into the kitchen!!

Man, does he have lungs!!

The guys were in at 8:30 and out at 12:45... I was told it would take 4 hours.. and they had a problem also.. They had to call customer support about a 'board'.. all I know is that the boss came in and said, "Oh, so it is reverse polarity??!!! "  ----whatever that means...

The only thing, one of the guys had a bad cold.. he was coughing and blowing his hose!! yuck!! I wanted to spray lysol all over the place, but I do not dare.

They tried out the new thermostat, and furnace; setting it for 74 degrees.. too hot!!  I ended up turning it down to 68.

I had to vacuum their mess, and then steam mop the floor with the Symphony steam mop.. and the entry way, and the kitchen, and the bathroom.. they all needed to be done. I have to do it again--missed a few spots..

I managed to wash the Red Christmas rugs while they were here.. I had to do something. And I did a quick vacuum in the extra room.

Right now I am physically pooped. I have the windows open, getting some fresh air in...

Everything is back in its place, almost.. a few things left to do....

I do not feel like soup tonight.. but who knows, I may just have a cup of broth and veggies.. no alphabets...

Artie is curled up sleeping in his quilt tent, on the coach. He does not know what to think. All the noise, now different, clean rugs down on the floor and the smell of something new...

He actually ate about 1/2 of a 6 oz can --so around a small can size of food while he was in my bedroom. I kept lying on the bed with him.

He did try to poop earlier, a couple times. I think he is getting cramps. He could not go; but he just went.. a tiny amount of what I would call soft serve ice cream consistency.. a bit more formed than the pudding, but a tiny amount. I wonder how it will be tomorrow...

Tomorrow will be the test for me with his fluids.. wish me luck...

@Artiemom, just thought I would toss in my two cents on fluids

I never froze Callie's needles, however, I ALWAYS warmed the f;uids for her, as she also shivered each time she got them.  I also warmed up a big bath towel to wrap her up in before giving them to her, to keep her nice and warm (and kind of contained).  She really seemed to enjoy that too.  As far as needles go, I used Terumo 20 gauge.  Yes, they are smaller, but really flow fast.  Smaller means an easier stick, but Terumo's are the BEST!

thanks for the tips!! I have terumo 19 gauge.. the 20 gauge are out of stock. I ordered through Thriving Pets..

I will try to warm the towel.. great tip.. I know, I never heard about freezing the needles, but I saw it on a website I was looking at.. a lot of people did.. If I have to continue and run out of the 19's, I will see if the 20 are in stock...

Per my vet, you can boil you needles for 10 minutes and they will be sterile and safe for re-use.
thanks, but I do not think I would take a chance on boiling needles... just my medical background..

Glad your HVAC got straightened out. Reverse polarity is how the motor was wired in. At least now it's done. Are you on oil or gas? I am always fascinated by those things- must be the tomboy in me.

How is Artie doing? I find it funny that he was howling to come out! Sweet boy just wanted to see what all the fuss was about!

I have gas heat and electric AC...

thanks for the explanation.

Artie is now curled up in his quilt tent.. he came out once to nibble a bit.. It is time to give him his 2nd dose of cisapride...

Watching the press briefing on the shootings at the Fort Lauderdale Airport... another crazy... the shooter gave up when he ran out of bullets... and he used a hand gun... does not sound like a terrorist to me..

I'm afraid you're misconstruing what I've said.  I did not ever say sub-q administration caused sarcomas, I said what I said in the context of you're using a frozen steel needle uneccessarily, giving you an example of why improper use of needles or other injections could be harmful, and not understanding why you'd want to rock the boat.

We're not going to get on the same page, so with this, I simply ask that you ask your vet for an additional 15 minute time slot at Artie's next exam and ask the vet to help you look for patterns from your diary.

Yes, almost forgot. Good luck with the fluids tomorrow.
Just remember to try & take a little moment before hand for yourself to take some deep breaths, to calm any nerves.
As you know, you being calm will help Artie by feeling your calmness.
Once you get it down, you'll be good.[emoji]128077[/emoji][emoji]128522[/emoji]
We're all here for you!

I DID IT!!!   I DID IT!!!  I DID IT!!!     Happy dance!!!

I just gave Artie his sub-q's.... all alone!! By myself.. no one to help me!!  I feel a huge sense of accomplishment.

I caught him while he was sleeping in his quilt tent.. I hung a hook on the wall at the end of the coach, put the bag on that.I warmed the bag fist and streamed out the coldish fluid. I opened up the top, sat in front of him, he did not know what to think. I was quick and fast. I think he thought he was getting some medicine or food, but I fooled him!! He did not flinch, and stayed so still... I was amazed..

Some of the fluid leaked out of the spot after I was done. and he did have a bubble..

right now he is so insulted and mad at me.. he has his back to me.. and is not happy...

I need to mark the bag the next time, to make it easier..

But I did it!!

I went about it fast and confidently.. he did not know what hit him!!

Last night he ate 1 1/2 cans of food. He also had a couple of pudding poops in the box. sigh.. need to get it normal..

Not eating much today. He does not care for the prescription rabbit. I would rather he eat it, but ...

I did open up a can of Pride Rabbit...

I will brush him tomorrow. I do not want to push the issue with bothering him after doing the sub-q's.. I gave him a big kiss and told him he was such a good boy....but he did not like me....

what a relief!!
