Earlier today I heard a kitten crying outside and tried to catch it but it ran under a car. I put some food out for it and managed to lure him out a bit but when I tried to get him he ran away. He looks really small, maybe about 2 months and its in the 30s degrees Fahrenheit right now, really, really cold and raining non stop. How can I catch this kitten asap so that it doesn't freeze out there? I left some food and a box for him out there but he looks so tiny I'm afraid he won't survive and I doubt the humane society is open tomorrow since its Christmas. What can I do? It breaks my heart to hear him crying and crying out there.

OH NO!!!  That is a crisis situation!!!  A humane trap is the most obvious answer but that would take knowing someone who would have a trap on hand.  In the hope that s/he will go into the box, I would put a plastic trash bag on the floor, then a space blanket, if you have one. You can then line the "bed" with some fleece, oat straw (supposed to be best), or wool, or a towel. You can make a "rice sock" with rice or cornmeal in a tube sock that is tied off with threat, and then microwave it  and add that to the bed for warmth.  An even better "box" is a Styrofoam cooler with portals cut into it. Try to place the box near some chairs or other obstacles that would add protection if a predator were to come around (his distress calls might alert predators
).

I hope that someone else comes along with a better solution.  Poor little thing - I am praying for you both!! Thank God that you are aware of his sad plight and are willing to help. I am hoping and praying for good news from you soon and please know that as a fellow-member of the TCS family (welcome, by the way), I am with you in thought and spirit....There are so many people here who would help you in New York minute if they could
   Sincerely, Susan

Hello, again! Another alternative (takes calm, steady nerves) is to approach the kitten and hope that it corners itself in an accessible place, then toss a towel over it and scoop it up. Try to quickly wrap the towel over & over it, so it  can't easily escape and dash off again.

WARNING - to do this takes preparation, preparation, preparation. First, have a cat carrier or other container immediately handy and ready to go (I stand the carrier upright, with the door open and facing the sky). Secondly, prepare to make a quick but sure grab, which means plenty of protective clothing and good but well-fitting gloves (those claws are sharp and the poor baby doesn't know that you are not meaning harm). Third, use a good flashlight, preferable a spotlight, at the last minute to blind the kitten, which will buy you time to scoop him up. Keep as calm as possible - cats are incredibly sensitive to emotions (I try to emulate the horse trainers that I was raised around - think calm, unruffled old-school cowboys).

In a way, time is on your side as the colder the kitten gets, the weaker and slower it will be.

This is the technique that I use to catch feral kittens. Even though the kitten will be wild (even the tamest of kittens will panic in this kind of situation),  it will pass. Again, I keep you and the kitten in my thoughts and prayers for a successful rescue!!!

Call the non emergancy number for local police they have access to animal officer i do believe they can help you. Another alternitive is the box outside that someone mentioned earlier if you have an electric heating pad that would keep kitten toaty warm and a few kibbles would lure him right in.

Unfortunately I was unable to get him last night but this morning we heard him crying again inside of the car. We opened up the hood and he was sitting there so my mom got him and put him in a carrier. He is very wild and tried to scratch but I'm just glad he was able to survive. He let us pet him a bit and even purred for like 5 seconds. He is still too scared to eat but I noticed he ate from the food I left out last night.

VERY clever to look under the car's hood - so many tragedies occur when the engine is started and a kitty, for sheer survival sought shelter there.  Thank you for never giving up!!! You and your mother are true cats' heroes - may you be doubly blessed for your good deeds.  And thank you for the update because many people here fail, or are unable, to let us know the conclusion of their crisis and we are left wondering. See you in the forums!
