Hello everyone, I would greatly appreciate your advice and help. Sorry for a long story.

My daughter have been asking me for a cat for a while, when I was a kid I had a cat which passed away a year ago at the age of 20 years old.  I was looking to buy one, but instead though about getting a street cat and giving it a home.

My first attemp was with a male cat that came to eat at the pourch, it was beautiful around a year old.  While the door was open he could explore the house but would hiss at me if I came to touch it. Some time after it would let me touch it. Once when I closed the door it just went mad, running around hiding and hissing at everyone. I let it out and it never came back.

Skip to 2 days ago, I went to the apartment building 3 days ago and saw 4 big ginger cats, 1 kitten and 1 kitten which is about 3-4 months old. They are all born and lived on the street. Trying to catch small kitten was almost impossible me and security guard were trying for an hour. Then he asked me if I wanted to take that 3-4 month old one. I agreed, when I approached it it didn't run away and let me pet it (cautiously).

Once I took it in my hands it went wild, scratching, hissing and trying to bite.

I got it home and allocated a room for it:

It's hissing every time I try to come too close .

First night I put food/water and litter box. It was hiding and never came out, he did eat a bit.

Second day not eat at all and hiding, at night ate all food but still hiding.

3rd day today still hiding, if Iám in a room it will not come out or eat, it seems to eat only when everyone is away or sleeping. (cat is alone in the room).

Today it got into a place where I dint want him to be, I forgot to take old broken computer case out, so I had to get it out so it started hissing and making aggressive sounds.

What can I do? Is it too late for it to adapt to a house? Will it never become a normal cat who is happy to be at home? Reason I took it inside is in Thailand a lot of them end up becoming road kills, everyday I drive I see a couple dead on the road.  One of those 4 ginger cats already had a leg broken by a bike.

Any advice is welcome, Iam thinking of taking it to the vet but trying to give it time to adjust. Which so far day 3 is almost the same as day one.

i'm attempting to socialize a 12 year old feral....as this is new to me, i'll yield advise to the experienced forum members...other than to offer..... great patience must be exercised, its not gonna happen in days or weeks....if not months. Researching some others experiences in posts here...years may be required to fully modify behavior (extreme examples)

Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping this cat.  Buying a kitten just adds to an industry that is basically cruel.  Helping this little street cat is one way you are making a difference!

Three months is not too old.  Remember, cats view all change as bad and it is when you living by your wits.  So he's thinks he's in a bad situation and is scared.  It is going to take weeks, even months for him to adjust.

Leave him in the bathroom and give him time.  Keep his routine the same as you can, day to day.  Make it boring.  Visit him often and just sit with him.  Read out loud - it will get him used to your voice and presence.

Allow him to make any approaches - never scoop him up or run after him.  You'll look like a great big predator.

I would advise getting him to the vet sooner rather than later, though.  If you have a carrier, make it comfortable enough for him to hide in.  You may be lucky and be able to close the door when he's in it.

Blessings on you for helping him!

We have a spare room where I put her with a few plastic chairs and some other stuff. Hope she comes around soon. Tuesday will take her to vet for jabs and other stuff.

Hello everyone,

Here is an update that I made about 4 days ago or so. The cat is doing great, still hiding when inside the house. But very gentle and likes to be pet :)

I try to let her out of her room every night, when she is active.

I wanted to ask for those with experience, how long will it take for it to be SCARED of going outside. Now it is still trying to run away everytime the door is open. I just want to make know how to make her stop doing that.

Once she get used to being inside, the call of the outside sound lessen.  I would keep her away from any doors and un-secure windows.

She may also be in heat - she's not too young.  Once she's fixed, that will all go away.

She looks 1000% better.  Good job!

Dear fellow forumers.

I need advice. Do the cat forget or forgive if I hurt them? Yesterday After NY celebration I accidently stepped on the cat in the dark. Now the cat is terrified of me.
Now it seems we are back to day 2 or 3 of the cat being here.

Is there anything I can do to get its trust back?
I am so upset as we were so close and getting along very well.

sunsetdreamer, you did a great job bringing this kitty home and you did a great job that she lets you pet her and she did had confidence in you by turning belly up for you to pet her
But as for the incident of stepping on her in the dark accidentally and now she is like back to square one. Try to entice her with a treat or a toy and speak gently to her. Get on your knees or lay on the ground and try to be on the same level as her. Avoid sudden moves and making loud sounds. Keep doing this and let her gain back her confidence and trust in you. Leave one of your unwashed shirt or t-shirt (not soiled) in the room if she is alone. Let her get use to your smell again and it'll be easier for you to approach her. But do not pull her out of her hiding.
Hope she don't take long to get back to her normal self again.

Give her a few days.  She'll be wary for awhile - after all she doesn't want a repeat!  But she will soon realize it was an accident.
