It's Christmas Eve! Have you all been good this year?

(that's not the question of the day, I just wanted to know: Have you been good?)

Today's question:

When you were a kid what present did you ask for?

I think I must have asked my parents for the same thing every birthday and Christmas between the ages of 4 and 14: A pony. I never got one, but it didn't stop me hoping and asking.

How about you?

I'm with you on the pony :lol3: I didn't ever get one for Christmas, but I was lucky enough to get a horse (TBA ex racer) when I was 13 :9: I didn't actually get a pony until I was in my 20's

I may have asked for a dog/puppy too. I loved my cats, but I adored dogs as well..and still do :heart3:

I don't remember asking for anything else in particular as a kid. I always had more fun giving than receiving, I think...and still do now!

I remember looking through the Sears catalog when it came close to Christmas. Our mother had us 4 kids pick out five things we just had to have and usually we got one of them! We were poor back then, so maybe  it was a different brand etc, but it was still exciting! I don't know why now but one of the best gifts I got was a tape recorder. Believe it or not, 50 years later my mom still has it with all our 'young' voices on it, priceless!

A bike was all I ever wanted for Christmas. I was a tomboy and did not have any use for girly things.

My sister and I both asked for a Suzy Smart doll and we got them. Very early 1960s.

Most of the time, even when very young, I wanted books. It used to drive my mother crazy. Then when I got older, I wanted records, the old 45s.

I would say I always wanted a horse as well.  We lived on a farm so it was possible for me to have one but my father was having none of it.  He said I wouldn't take care of it and he didn't want to.  He also said there was no such thing as a fence that a horse couldn't get out of.  I don't know what it is about girls and horses.  It seems like most girls go through a stage, often a very long stage of wanting a horse.

I also remember getting the Christmas catalogs.  That was so exciting because they were filled with all these different things for Christmas.  What I asked for differed from year to year but for many years what I wanted was actually secondary to a horse.

I had one of the earlier Barbie dolls as a child.  My sister and I would actually study the catalog because we knew we could only pick out one outfit so we wanted to make sure it was our favorite.  By the time I entered elementary school all I wanted was a furry friend, (cat, dog, hamster, rabbit).  We lived in an apartment and the landlord did not allow pets except for fish.  I cheated a little and got a turtle.  The very first year I was married we got 2 kittens and I finally got my furry friend.

A Horse.

Whom I got in my late teens! And still currently have

And to be fair my parents were all equestrians themselves
with one of them being a grand prix competitor. So I grew up with horses and the horsey world, never left a phase. Plus, my horse came as a youngin' so I had to train him myself from scratch. I explain because I remember my classmates being miffed at me, thinking I was wealthy or something!  And statements like "You're the only one who actually got a pony!" Geez, damned if I was deemed poor damned if deemed stuck up and wealthy, which is odd considering lot's of the popular kids were well to do..

(Among worse stuff, long story short I was bullied pretty badly in High School.)

ANYWAY!

I also wanted a lot of dance things, horsey toys, weapons, computer games, more animals etc

Newborn Thumbelina. Probably around, 1967? My younger sister and I were begging for one of these each.  It's really the only present I recall specifically wanting.

A few days before Chanukah, we found 2 of them hidden in a hallway closet.  We were giddy about it!

It was made by Ideal.  Had a string you pulled on the back of the doll that made her move "realistically" (LOL)  Looking at it now I can understand why we wanted one. I'ts a very cute doll.

I asked for a lot of things: toys, a real pet, etc. I never got anything I asked for
All I ever got was clothes and educational books / workbooks / etc because I wasn't an A+ student, if anything at all since we don't celebrate Christmas. Sometimes a relative or neighbor would give us a board game or something.

I remember wanting Barbie dolls, Cabbage Patch Kids and a bike. We used to go through the huge Toys R Us catalog and circle what we wanted.

Hmm, I don't remember anything consistent. I'm sure I asked for something every year. The only things I remember specifically were wanting engineering graph paper, which we couldn't find at the office supply store, and my mom went and found at a university book store, and I was very excited and everyone thought it was the weirdest gift; and I really wanted and got a CD player when I was around 12. My family was fairly well-off, so I often got the things I really wanted.

@Columbine  @Cassiopea  You're both so lucky!

It's funny, but I don't remember ever asking for dolls when I was a kid. I wanted a pony and if I couldn't have that I wanted things like a microscope or a fountain pen.

We always had cats and rabbits and goldfish in our house, so we never had to beg our parents for more pets.

We flipped when our father brought home a tape recorder. I even remember the brand name - Elizabethan. It must have been around the same time as you got yours as I was a teenager when he bought it & I'm 66 next month. Wonder what happened to our young voices on it?
