Hey there,

I'm new to this site, but I have a pretty serious question. My kitten, Oliver, is about 4 months. About a week ago, we discovered a zit like bump on his head. It's about the size of say, half my pinky nail, and it's perfectly round, smooth, covered with hair, not bleeding, and literally directly between his ears on the top of his head. It's not attached to the bone or anything, and doesn't seem to bug him when we touch it. We called the vet about a week ago and they said to just keep an eye on it - it could just have been some weird fluke that'll go away.

Well, we're out of town for 10 days for the holidays now. The pet sitter that's staying with them brought up the bump (we didn't warn her in advanced, which was a bad move on our part - I just didn't think about it), and seems concerned. While she said he's eating normally and seems to be using the littler box just fine, she's worried that it's an abscess. We do have another, slightly older cat, but the two get along just fine, and are best friends. While they rough house, it really doesn't get rough enough that I think Oliver would get hurt, and Milton (our older kitten - about 7 months) grooms him all the time. However, the pet sitter doesn't know Oliver or Milton very well, and when I ask if he seems to be acting normal, she doesn't know. Like I said, he's eating and playful when she's there, but she's not there all the time.

I'm just incredibly worried now. We won't be home until VERY late on the 30th. Which means the earliest we could take him in to the vet is the 31st. The pet sitter could take him, but she's only there for 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes in the evening, and it'd cost us a good deal of money to have her take him for an emergency visit - in extra pet sitting fees.

I'm just really really worried. I don't want there to be any issue with him, and if it's going to risk his health, comfort, or safety, I don't want to risk that waiting until I get home, either. My cats are super important to me, and I'm just really worried about him, especially because he's so young. I hate that he has this bump while we're not home to help him or care for him, or even keep an eye on him, and I feel awful that we didn't get it checked while we were home /: Thanks so much for your advice :)

Well, you are not home.. and you had previously asked the vet about it and  he said to give it time.  Granted it is unfortunate that this is turning into a great deal of time... I personally say do not let it ruin your holiday with worry when there is not much you can do about it.  IF it makes you feel better, I am sure the pet sitter could take a photo so you can see if it is changing or staying the same as before. Also then you could post it here ad maybe some more experienced poster would be able to give you their two cents.  Just assure the pet sitter that your vet is aware of it and it is being monitored - and that you have an appointment upon your return.  The sitter probably doesn't want any liability, and who knows, maybe wants the extra income from taking the kitty in...

Yeah, I suppose you're right. I'm just worried that it's infected, and I would feel awful if we left him with an infection for 10 days by himself. But I suppose if it's staying the same and he's eating and drinking, he'll probably be okay. You're right about the pet sitter; I think he'll be fine, but I just wish he could have been totally healthy and fine when we left them for the first time.

I guess we'll take him in on New Year's Eve when we get back - thanks for at least reassuring me.
