Sophie started ripping out tufts of her hair all along her back about 2 months ago. I bought some spray to moisturizer her skin which she fights me about putting on. Took her to the vet and she deemed either allergies or anxiety. They gave her a $50 shot that seemed to do nothing. When we left for a few days on vacation and returned- she had pulled out all her hair around her anus. She's bald there. The vets next move is anxiety medication but I'm against it. Then tonight- without prompt- she peed on the bed. It doesn't even really smell like cat pee. But that's all it could be. Any ideas I can present to the vet on what her issue is?

Have you considered her diet at all?  That is the first thing I would look at.  Try changing her over to foods that are most like her natural diet.

We are going to have a special Q&A with a feline nutritionist here on TCS in the near future.  Watch for it.

She's on a LID diet of dry and wet food. I did all that when she was throwing up daily and now she doesn't have issues.

We are running a full blood panel today. If all is well, the doctor said she needs anxiety medication. We are looking at thyroid, kidneys, etc. she also grabbed a urine sample

Is he hypersensitive if you touch him near those areas, like freaks out if you touch the skin there?  If so, please push them to consider other possible root causes.

A friend of mine's cat started pulling hair in the exact same places you mentioned, and he had a spinal issue causing nerve irritation from the base of his tail around and downwards around his anus/genital area.  He was pulling hair and pulling hair, and it progressed to where he was biting and had raw spots after he pulled all the hair out, and the specialist they took him to said there were a couple of nerve paths being inflamed that led to him constantly picking those areas.  He also would pee here and there in odd places.  Push them to make sure they consider all possibilities.  Her vet put them through the gamut of medicines and diets over months, just playing trial and error, and by that time he was having major issues with spasms in that area causing him some incontinence.  He was treated successfully though, but the spine issue is still there, they just manage it very well.

She's always had an issue with her butt being touched. She doesn't get nasty, but she gets vocal and jerks it up if you pet her there. She doesn't mind me touching where she's pulled her hairs out though. She's done it to the base of her tail too. If her panels come back normal I will ask. I am on the same medication for nerve pain that is given for anxiety, so that should help her some if that is her issue.

My friend's kitty flipped out when they touched wherever he had pulled his hair out though, not just doing the butt raise like most cats do, he would bite (hard!) or run.  They did put him on gabapentin, and it made an entire world of difference in him.  He's still going strong, although she tells me he has good days and bad days, and he has scars from his picking where hair didn't grow back.

One of the ferals I captured became his "brother from another mother", that's how I got to know them!

All her blood work was clear and great. I'm picking up some anxiety meds for her tomorrow. I don't want to drug my cat, but if it's to help her- I'll try.

@peekasoph   That is great to know her blood work was good!!  Hey, sometimes we need medicines.  It is definitely worth a try if it might help her.  Keep us updated!

She's been on the medicine zyklene since the 23rd. More hair is missing and she's peed on the bed twice since starting her new medicine. [emoji]128548[/emoji][emoji]128529[/emoji]

Oh no!!   Have you called and let your vet know?  Of course, they may just tell you to give it more time.

They sell Zyklene on Amazon now--no prescription needed for it.  I've heard mixed reviews about it.    It is supposed to be safer than prozac because it contains something derived from milk that causes a calming effect.  I read up about it and was asking around about it when I was introducing a new cat into my household.  I know a lady that gave it to her puppy to calm him down and it worked well, but know another that gave it to her cat and it didn't do anything.

You might want to go read the reviews about it on Amazon.

I immediately looked the product up when I got it, Bc I'm crazy about knowing what I'm eating and what my cats are eating. I had doubts about an all natural but it seemed better than the alternative. The vet Sophie has been seeing is out but the tech is going to ask the other vet for ideas.

Keep us updated!  I just hate when something like that is going on and you know they are miserable and can't help.  Watching them do the hair pulling is heartbreaking.

I took her back in. She's dropping weight but eating normally. She's down 3/4 of a lb from a month ago. The other vet and I poured over the bloodwork. We are checking it again because the white blood cell count was low. Her overall protein was high normal and she had protein in her pee. But he said that it wasn't really that abnormal and the only thing that really concerned him was the white blood cell count. I will know today what it is. He said that if it's not better, we need to start looking at immune disorders, but for now, he's pretty confident is psychogenic alopecia and we are changing from zkylene to prozac. He said not every psych medicine is a cure all and we will monitor and change as needed. He said there is something triggering her but we have made 0 changes in the house. He said it could be anything from detergent, a candle, etc. So frustrating for a cat so intelligent to be breaking down like this if this is really her issue. I'm sad, but I just want my baby to get better. The vet said it's critical we handle it asap bc of her weight dropping.

How about trying the gabapentin?  It works really well on weird nerve pain.  I took it for a year after a car accident for residual nerve pain in one forearm and eventually the pain faded and I dropppped the dose down and then went off it.  It's fine now, but it was like little electric shocks without the gabapentin.  I had no side effects from the gabapentin at all.
