I took in (yet another) pregnant stray recently. Heavily pregnant but in good health according to the vet.
She went into labour last night and delivered 2 stillborn kittens and 2, what looked like, lumps of meat in kitten form. Plus 4 placentas.
Vet check today says all is well physically with mum .

Mum cat was devastated. She tried for ages to revive the stillborn kittens.

Anyway, I also have another stray who had 1 kitten. That kitten is 5.5 weeks old.
Now the bereaved mum cat has decided that the 5.5 week old kitten is hers. She is fiercely protective of her and will bite if you try to touch the kitten. She keeps trying to pick her up and go upstairs with her. The kittens actual mum is not too happy about this.

Bereaved cat is yowling for the kitten and it's heartbreaking to witness.

How can I help her?

This is truly heartbreaking and yet more proof that cats do have strong emotions and feelings.

I'm not sure how to help out.

Are you looking for a way to console the mother?

Is there a way to separate the mother from the other mom and kitty?

Are you keeping this little mom?  If so can you get her a kitten companion.

Sorry I can't be more help.

The only thing I can think of (other than separating the mothers) is to call local shelters & see if they have any orphan kittens that they are bottle-feeding. You could give one of the orphans to the bereaved momma.

Yes, as the above commenter says, call the rspca and cats protection locally, see if they've got any orphans (or large litters) she could 'adopt' so they don't need to be bottle-fed.

I agree with the others. Good if she become a foster momma.  Not only for the grieving part, but also because she has apparently a good and strong mother instincts...

The shelters nearby may need help.  Also you can contact the vets nearby.  They often know of private owners whom need help.   As she was examined by the vet, and declared healthy, private owners will be happy to have her as  foster momma.

If YOU will take in the fosterlings, or if she shall be lend to the fosterlings, is another question, and I suppose it depends on the exact circumstances and what is comfortable with you.
