Hey guys. New to the forum, and I want to know a bit more about how far my cat is from birth. So far she's gotten fat and gained quite a bit of weight, her nipples have reddened. Sometimes she goes to the kittening box I made for her, otherwise she lies on the cool floor. I do feel the kittens kicking/moving around every now and then, but not certain how far she is from birth.. any information would help. Thanks

Hey there - Welcome to TCS, I have no doubt you will find many answers here.

May I ask what the mother to be's name is?  and How old is she?

Has she been to the vet?  The vet will be able to tell you how far along she is.

Her names Freya. I have not been to the vet. We got her as a kitten last year on Christmas.

I have not been to the vet. We've had 2 other cats that have been pregnant before. never took them to the vet cause we barely knew they were pregnant

1 ended up giving birth on my sisters bed. the other we just noticed a few days before birth.

Thanks.

What a sweet name.  I'm curious, did you adopt her or did you find her on the street?

Since you've had her for a year and wasn't spayed, has she ever been to a vet at all since you've had her.

My mom adopted her from a friend.

Shes always been a healthy cat so we never took her to the vet.

First let me say what a sweetie she is.  Beautiful coat.  I'm happy these sweet kitties were taken in and protected from the elements of the outdoors.  With that said, it's really important to spay her after this litter, and bring her to a vet.  Cat's for the most part will hide their illnesses and it may be too late to correct a simple issue.  Also, after the kittens are born, are they going to a No Kill Shelter or are you keeping them.  I ask because, the kittens will have to be spayed and/or neutered as well.

I'm glad Freya is doing well, but if you can please call a vet.

What type of food is she eating.

There is a terrific Thread started regarding a young cat taken in who had babies, 4 of them died but 2 are thriving and so cute.  You can get some tips from the member, it may be able to help you make decisions regarding care and keep.  This is the link:  TheCatSite.com  › Forums  › Feral Cats and Rescue  › Caring for Strays and Ferals  › Tera + 2 - 4

Please keep me posted on this sweet girl.  I bet she'll have cute kitties.

Warm regards, Hope and my 2 sweet angels Simon & Chestnut

We'll try get her spayed. When she was in heat, I kept her in my room but she escaped through the one window and we didn't know until she didn't go in heat again.

We are keeping the kittens. Its gonna be my Christmas/birthday present :) We will probably spay the kittens as soon as possible.

At the moment we don't have kitten food, so we feed her puppy food, she enjoys it too much. She'd hear me from the pantry downstairs and sit on the door handle upstairs (keeping her in my room until she gives birth).

I will be posting pictures of them as soon as they're born :)

We don't have much money to spay that often, so every couple months or so the MSPCA has a free spaying and neutering that we take them to. (didn't know how to edit posts)

Puppy food does not contain sufficient nutrients.  Cats have different dietary needs, including taurine.  She can get very sick without it.  Please get her cat or kitten food.  She also needs increased amounts of food while she is pregnant/nursing.  She should have unlimited access to dry food and wet food several times a day.

Spaying is important for her health since each heat is a tremendous strain on her body.  Each heat increases her risk of reproductive cancer, and can result in pyometria.  Cats can get pregnant when they are not in heat as well as they are induced ovulators.  Which city are you located near?  We can help you to find a local low cost clinic.  All the babies will need to be vetted as well as spayed / neutered.

I understand about the money situation, but I learned the hard way that a cat's diet is extremely sensitive (who knew).  My cat got sick by eating the wrong CAT food.

Please make sure you get cat food or the kittens may be born ill and well as the mothers heath is as risk.

Can't wait to see pictures.

The MSPCA in Massachusetts? They offer various spay / neuter programs: https://www.mspca.org/programs-resources/spay-neuter-services/ There is a statewide program for spay and neuter assistance (SNAP) as well.

If you live in another state that starts with M, you can check http://www.spayusa.org/ for low cost or free spay / neuter programs.

These are street cats. Already had 2 cats give birth eating dog food and they've lived very long healthy lives. When we get cat food, they barely eat it. They've grown on dog food for over 6 years and vets say they're healthy. Only time they died was cause neighbors poisened them or got hit by a car. Thanks for the help though. :)

I'm glad that you haven't had issues in your experience, but this is not a safe choice in terms of their health.

I too am glad you haven't had issues with feeding but please educate yourself on the side effects of a cat eating the wrong food., especially dog food.

By what you say about her nipples, she's probably getting close.

Best of luck with Freya.

Do you remember when your cat got out? If you do, we can figure out her approximate due date. In general, you'll see/feel kitten movement for 2-3 weeks before birth. [emoji]128571[/emoji]

Yesterday she had what we think was her mucus plug. It was a green discharge from her area. A few minutes later she licked it off. Todays she been purrig and lying on her back for me to feel her kittens moving.
