I feel so bad that my little one has had a hard go of things in her 6 months. Her upper respiratory infection was finally starting to clear, then she started peeing on the bed and i figured she must have some kind of infection- they found crystals. Now her URI symptoms are almost gone (still has some difficulties smelling), she's peeing in her box, she's eating and playing well but now I notice she has bad breath. Oh no! So now I'm making another appointment with the vet because I'm guessing she has an infected tooth. I looked at her mouth and I do see one tooth that looks as though it hasn't come in yet (still transitioning from baby to adult teeth) and it looks black.

I've only had her 2 months and it seems as though there's one problem after another. Why is my kitty having so many problems and what can I do to help her from getting sick? I've had 5 cats throughout the years, all were rescues and they've never had problems like these.

What are you feeding her? It sounds like her immune system is just down a bit. I would encourage you to feed her the highest quality meat based wet food you can afford. Feeding bio appropriate foods with little fillers will help give her body the fuel it needs to recover better and faster from her illnesses, not to mention wet food is the best way to prevent any other urinary issues.

I was feeding her wet blue buffalo grain free chicken food but then the crystals showed up and the vet put her on hills prescription c/d. So she's been on that for the past month. I don't know if the prescription diet is good for her, I've read mixed reviews about it.

Took her to the vet today and it turns out that she does not have a tooth infection, rather it's a loose baby tooth. I asked why her breath smells so bad and the vet said that it may be because of her loose tooth. I told her that she didn't have bad breath before and asked if it could be because of the food. Maybe the c/d doesn't agree with her. I've had 6 cats throughout the years and I've never smelled breath like this.

The vet also said that I will have to feed her a special diet forever to prevent the crystals. I'm fine with that but i want to research which brand will be best for her. Do you have any idea of which brand is best?

Thanks.

The c/d canned is not a bad brand. I fed it to my boys for awhile and it was quite well with them.

So sorry you've had a sick kitty, kudos for getting on top of the issues so quickly. When you've time, read the section on feline urinary issues on catinfo.org   that site has been really helpful to me and the FLUD cat we adopted last month. Also, hop on over to the nutrition section of this forum as there are many threads about what foods to feed cats with urinary crystals. There are other options out there, once your vet clears the kitty's urinary health issues. You don't need to feed Hills for life. You do need to feed a high protein, low carb, low phosphorous/mineral diet. Canned is best, kibble a no no for these kids and lot's & lot's of water.

I'm taking my cat back to vets on the 27th for checkup and if his urine is clear and my vet approves, he's awesome, I'm looking to switch from our present food, Royal Canin Feline Urinary So, to one of Dave's Pet Food low phosphorous, low magnesium canned and a couple of the Weruva varieties. I'm mostly sticking to chicken & turkey bases and avoiding all fish/seafood's as the bones in fish are high in magnesium. Best of luck, the food issue is enough to make one crosseyed. When feeding commercial brands you need to pick your battles as you can't find any food that doesn't have every last little thing that is bad for them long term,  out of their diets. But you can avoid those that concern you the most, like soy and carrageenan, ect.  A bit of reading and the helpful folks here and you'll sort things out in no time.

The nutrition section also a whole section devoted to feeding raw. Give it a browse too. I'm not ready to make that jump yet, still reading my eyeballs off.
