OK, so I am up at 3:40 a.m. worrying that I have turned my cat against the water fountain that he used to LOVE.  He has always been great about drinking plenty of water, as long as we have the fountain.  I got the bright idea to wash it in the dishwasher a few weeks ago and it has suddenly occurred to me that I haven't seen him drinking from it in days.  He will drink from a bowl, also, but I know he doesn't drink as much that way.  Could the dishwasher have left a different odor on the fountain that he doesn't recognize or like?  And if I go back to hand washing with regular dish detergent will that take care of it or have I ruined the smell for good?  Ah, the things that keep me awake!

I mean you could just hand wash it again if you think maybe it has a weird smell on it. I'm not sure they're dishwasher safe though? I never put things like that in the dishwasher.

The Drinkwell is dishwasher safe except for the motor and electric cord part. That is easily removed from the base so you can clean the washable parts.

I'm not sure if a dishwasher would leave an odor or anything. You can hand wash the fountain to see if that makes any difference.

Yes, it's dishwasher safe on the top rack.  I'm just worrying about funky odors.  I've always been so glad that both my 'boys' drink a good bit of water and just hope I haven't messed that up!  I'm washing them by hand today.  We have two and it just gets to be a chore doing it by hand every week, but I suppose I'll be going back to that. I have made it a point to rinse them well after taking them out of the dishwasher, but who knows what those little noses can pick up.
