This first paragraph will be back story, skip it if you like! A few weeks ago my cat Kaya decided she no longer liked the food I gave my cats. After several days I got new food and she went about eating it. But by then I thought she looked kind of yellow in her ears. My mom told me they looked ok. But a week later it was very obvious she was yellow and I drove to an e-vet an hour away. They kept her for 4 days giving her IV fluids. Kaya acted perfectly normal until she came home from the vet. She was eating fine there. But she went downhill. I don't know if it was the medication or just the illness catching up with her. While at the vet she had a bunch of tests including blood work, x-ray, ultrasound, and liver biopsy. She was a doll while in there and everybody loved her. She was happy. The specialist said her illness was either hepatitis or lymphoma.

Fast forward to today, we officially get the diagnosis of hepatic lipidosis. There is no permanent damage to the liver (no cirrhosis) so they say it is treatable. Problem is, she won't eat or drink. We are trying an appetite stimulant first and then going to a feeding tube if she doesn't start eating on her own. I know nutrition is the ONLY way she'll get better. She is so weak right now she will only walk a few steps before resting for a long time. Her favorite spot is under the bed. How likely is it that she will eat enough on her own to avoid a feeding tube? We have already borrowed and spent over $2,400, and will have to borrow more for a feeding tube, but it will get done if it's needed. I have tried syringe fluids and feedings but she is just letting things fall out of her mouth instead of swallowing it. She may be getting subQ fluids tomorrow, I know how critical water is for cat's kidneys.

She is currently on Clavamox, Denamarin, Prednisone, and one starting with an M. We have a med for nausea, too, starts with a C, but it didn't seem to help her appetite so I will spare shoving another pill down her throat tomorrow. I feel like a horrible person making her endure these pill givings, but hopelessly explain to her it will help her feel better. I wish she understood me!

How long after the feeding tube did your hepatic kitties start to perk up and have more energy?

I'm so sorry you and Kaya are going through this.  She's very fortunate to have you.

I am afraid I have no substantive advice for you but I know someone else will shortly.

I just wanted to let you know how awesome I think you are for taking such good care of Kaya.

Unfortunately, when I checked on Kaya this morning I found she had passed away during the night.
