Hi everyone,

I've been away for a few months.  I lost my soul cat Chessy in May and then went through a really bad divorce, which was finally over this month.  My senior kitty Mia and I are in our own apartment now and doing well.  She has IBD and kidney disease.  Her last checkup at the vet was a few months ago but we are going back again soon.  I've been considering adopting a kitten for a little while, as long as the vet thinks it wouldn't stress out Mia too much.  I found this blind kitten online (my friend also saw her at the shelter) and I've been considering adopting her after the new year:

I've never had a blind cat before but I've been doing some research.  I keep my place very clean and never leave stuff lying around.  My place is also pretty small so I won't be moving furniture around.  My main concern is the layout of my apartment - I have a top floor small loft area, and I'm worried that a blind cat could fall from there.  Here's a pic for reference.

I welcome any thoughts.  Thanks!

Happy Holidays!

That's great that you are doing this, one of my cats is blind from birth and super happy.  It may be harder on a cat who once had vision.  Feel free to let me know if you have questions.  As to the cat in question, as with all cats found online its important to meet the cat and make sure the personality is a good fit for you, and to try and find out from the rescue if the cat likes other cats.  Introductions can be fraught, more so for a blind cat.  If your cat is upset with the new cat, the blind cat could become quite scared not knowing where your cat is.  This is an important thing to consider, and I've been there so i know.

So for me, the biggest thing with a blind cat is the introduction with other cats.  Other than that we do very little to accommodate her blindness, she needs almost no help.  We do talk to her a lot, so she knows where we are.  But she acts so much like a sighted cat that many people don't believe she's fully blind.

This is a funny concept, but jenny is visually blind, but not spatially blind.  What i nean is after her watching her for so long i can tell she does spatial mapping in her head, and that she has spatial memory.  Yu can join this blind cat facebook group if you want, one of several.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/1648311348814482/
That is so cool. I'll check it out, thanks!

I visited Isobella a few days ago, and it turns out shes not fully blind or a kitten. They just think her vision is limited. She was definitely following us and swatting at another cat walking by when she was on my lap.

I think I'm going to wait a bit.
