I used to use a feeder bowl and let him eat on demand. That didn't work, he was eating 3 bowl a day. So I started 2x per day in a regular bowl. He eats it so fast he vomits. What do I do?

By the way, it's Purina One--same brand and flavor since he was a kitten. So it's not that. I'm tired of cleaning cat puke.

good evening,

Feeding depends on a fair few factors. How often your cat feeds, how old or young she or he . how active they are, the content of the feed.

I'm not familiar with Purina, but if it is rich in protein then you could feed a couple of times a day easily.

We generally free-feed dry food for ours, and we add in canned and fresh fish as well as cooked meat (beef and lamb) to fit in with our diet. They also do get raw giblets occasionally.

It's not something we worry too much about, we're blessed that both of our cats are niether fussy, nor weak stomached and we often trust them to show us what they can or cannot eat.

You can buy slow feeder bowls, they have spikes in the bowls to force the cat to eat around the spikes to eat slowly. Alternatively, you can use a food trail so that the cat has to walk between the small portions of food. you can also puzzle feed. Putting the food in a small container with small holes, again forcing the cat to work for the meal.

It might be the sudden change in meal times that's caused him to throw up so frequently, you can try issuing smaller portions, more regularly. Or laying out a large portion in the morning, after a few days he may realise that he doesn't HAVE to eat it all at once.

Hi,

I had a Tom named Jackson who had no control over his food intake (much like my husband at that time lol).  He would gorge on his evening wet food then proceed to polish off his sister's feed which I kept seperate.  One night he found his way into the cat biscuit bulk bag and gorged himself before vomitting several times over the carpets in my military bungalow!  Not only was it stressful for me but also for the cat because he was evidentally in discomfort after his stomach went nuclear!!  Queens have a tendency (generally), to moderate their food intake but many Toms really behave like they don't know where nor WHEN their next meal is coming from!!

My advice would be to feed him a vet-recommended amount of dry food in the morning then ignore his "cupboard-love cries" until lunch.  You can get these timed feeders whereby the lid pops up at a designated time should you be in employment.  Then allow him his wet food at night but if necessary, feed it in small amounts so he has a chance to digest it.

Can you split the feeds to 3 times per day? If he's getting too hungry he's going to continue scarfing it down and being sick.

My boy cat doesn't understand why I don't feed him constantly either.

It may be too much at once. If they gorge; they are likely to vomit. So I would feed him a lower amount so he doesn't gorge. But smaller meals than 3 cups at once. That is too much to have at one sitting.

He probably has nothing medical going on... but do a vet check if this keeps happening cats can get dehydrated quickly. Or maybe put him on the Purina gentle formula that really helped my Tiger boy out as the kibbles were smaller.
