my cat has had hyperthyroidism and HCM for the past year. All during the year he was stabilizing and improving but in the past few months, he seems on the decline and the vets are puzzled. First, our boiler was broken for a couple of weeks and the useless landlords took forever to fix it but in the mean time, my cat had gotten a cold. we gave him a round of antibiotics but after a few weeks he didnt improve so we took him back to the vet. they were really worried at the next visit because he had lost weight, become dehydrated and had dried feces in his stomach that hadnt passed. basically, they were worried something more sinister was going on, like kidney failure or cancer. another thing was his thyroid was now too low rather than too high.

but they ran a bunch of tests but nothing in the bloodwork seems to indicate cancer or kidney disease, even though they say the weight loss etc leads them to think he should have it. clinically he is fine but he's still losing weight. he did finally get over the cold and was a lot more vibrant and purring a lot, much more than he ever had. but now this past week, he seems skinnier and less upbeat. although he is still eating, drinking, and jumping and occasionally playing.

i'm worried and the vets say they are puzzled because something seems a miss but none of the tests are showing anything. the tests just include bloodwork though.

I don't know where you live or if this is possible but sometimes it's best to go to a vet's vet, i.e. veterinary teaching hospital (medical school).  When our dog displayed mysterious symptoms and the regular vet said in his 30 yrs. of practice he had never seen anything like it before he referred us to a specialist at a veterinary teaching hospital.  Fortunately they were able to make a diagnosis and offer the proper treatment which gave him 13 more years, more than anyone even the specialty vets expected.  Cornell, U C Davis, & U Penn are just a few examples of veterinary teaching hospitals.  I wish you the best of luck, please keep us posted on your cat's condition.
