At restaurants, we always tip at least 20%; during the holidays, we give more because it is the season and we know servers can always use the money. We figure if we can afford to eat out, then we can also afford to tip. When the pizza guy delivers, we always try to give him a good tip, too, because we appreciate not having to go pick up the pizza.

Now if the service is really bad, we'll still leave something, but it won't be 20%. We rarely have really bad service, to the point where Rick won't leave anything and we try to consider that s/he might be having a bad day or something else is going on. If the service is simply horrid, no tip....that may have happened to us only once or twice, where it was that bad that Rick didn't tip something.
The few times we haven't tipped we have spoken to the management.

Tipping delivery drivers is another sore spot for me.  I already pay a delivery charge... and that is his one job is to bring the pizza. I still tip the one or two times a year I am desperate enough to order delivery... but it ticks me off every time.

I always try to tip waiters/waitresses at least 20%. The only time I don't tip is when the service is REALLY BAD. I understand that sometimes people have bad days and it might reflect on their work a bit. So even if my waiter/waitress seems frazzled or they aren't in the best of moods, I still tip because why make someone's bad day worse?

I have worked in the restaurant buisness for 10 years and I understand how awful customers can be sometimes.
Yeah, it sucks that the tips get pooled and split at some restaurants.

About the amount that restaurants charge for food:

The cost of the food has to cover: actual food cost, hourly pay for chefs, managers and hosts, utility bills for the building + make some sort of (small) profit on top of that. If servers were to make hourly pay, the food cost would go up even higher than it already is and restaurants would then lose customers.
I get all that, and in a restaurant, I do tip, though not with a glad heart on many occasions.  And I don't feel sorry for restaurants because they have overhead.  Everyone has overhead, from your doctor's office to your plumber.. from your vet to your mobile vet... the police station... We all got bills!  If restaurants were not profitable, there would not be so many of them.  The topic was specific about HOLIDAY tipping, and I tell ya, my very own children are lucky to get gifts out of me.  As far as servers having a bad day or being frazzled... ah, shoot, I am not even going to get into that.  I will just say that everyone has rough days, cashiers, secretaries, lawyers, doctors, janitors, lawn people, police officers... doesn't give anyone the right to take it out on someone else.  Of course we may have very different incomes so we look at the situation differently, but the one time a week I eat out, it is a treat I save for and I expect it to be special.

I have no problem whatsoever tipping the driver. Yes it is their job BUT they use their own vehicles and pay for their own gas. The delivery charge you pay does NOT go to the driver. These places that charge these fees tell you that flat out. Please do not punish the driver for a policy he/she did not come up with. I will not get deliveries from someplace that charges a delivery fee. I go pick the order up. If they do not charge a delivery fee, I will and tip the driver around 50% of the order total. I usually tip around 50% in a restaurant too unless the service is atrocious but I have never stiffed a server. Why? I know all too well what it is like to work for tips. It is not easy. People who know what it's like to work for tips almost always tip more than those who do not (at least that has been my experience). I have been punished by diners because of kitchen errors too many times.

I have also been in a busy breakfast place that was understaffed and have grabbed coffee pots and walked around filling cups so the poor girl didn't get a hard time for something she had no control over. That gets you some weird looks I can tell you but I have been there too and it is no fun. Waiting tables is exhausting, thankless work and all too often you are blamed for things you have no control over (staffing, kitchen errors, being out of something, etc, etc etc).

That delivery charge doesn't go to the driver, it goes to restaurant.  The restaurants didn't use to charge that.  I don't know the why of it  or if  there is even a reason.  The only reason I can think of is maybe some kind of additional amount they have to pay for liability or worker's comp.  Delivery drivers are one of the ones that don't even have to be paid the set minimum wage.   They are supposed to make up  the difference if the tips don't make up the  difference but I don't  know how  many actually do that.

I really seem to be making people upset by answering a question honestly.  per my earlier answer  "I still tip the one or two times a year I am desperate enough to order delivery"... but more and more I rely on frozen pizza, its hot, fresh, doesn't give me attitude. If I have time, I like to make homemade pizza too.  I am glad  you are able to afford to tip at least 50% of your bill and happy for your servers too... but I think that is extravagant.  I worked as a server for many years, some people tipped, some people didn't, I was nice to everyone.  Being a server was my job, and I liked making people's days better and brighter.  When I started hating it, I found a different job. Delivery drivers know they will be using their own vehicle.  As for working for tips... do you know how many servers I hear bragging about how they make $100 an hour in tips?

I'd like to know what restaurant that's in because I'd guess it's a very high end one. There's no way in hades a server in a family type place is making $100 an hour in tips. NO WAY. $100 a day? Maybe. An hour. Nope. You get a section with only a certain amount of tables and depending on the meals being served and the section you get, the tables are not going to get turned over that fast.

I guess I failed to mention that I very rarely go to sit down places. I refuse to wait for a table, it's usually too loud, the tables are too close together and small children are allowed in and more often than not, are ignored and unsupervised by their parents while they throw tantrums and sometimes food.

Back to the holiday topic as to release the hijacked thread- I don't tip differently because of what time of year it is.

It's not so much about tipping differently, like randomly tipping more at a restaurant or whatever, but, back in the day, there was a holiday/year-end bonus for a lot of people, so it became an expected thing for tipped employees. I think it was more for richer people who had doormen and drivers and all that kind of thing. But even now it's fairly common to give an extra bonus to certain people, like regular hairstylists/dog groomers/petsitters/newspaper people, etc.

Yeah, tipping at restaurants annoys me too (I did grow up in Japan!), but I also know that being a server is pretty crummy and it's not their fault the bigwigs keep all the profits and don't pay them enough. So I don't take it out on the server/delivery person. If I really wanted to pursue change I'd start some kind of movement to actually pay the lower-level employees enough to live on, but not withhold tips.

There's a pizza place (I think it's Papa John's, but not sure....I'm not a big Papa John's fan, but Rick likes it) that actually says on the pizza box that the delivery charge is NOT for the delivery person and to please tip accordingly anyway. So yeah, we're paying both a delivery fee (sometimes it's about a buck or so), and we also tip. For a $14 order, we'll give the guy $5 or so because the pizza place doesn't pay him for his gas or anything; my understanding is that the delivery guys are supposed to pay for their own gas to drive around. And besides, then we don't have to go for the pizza ourselves.....we've gotten lazy in our old age and it's so much easier to just call down to whatever pizza place, make the order, and then wait for it to be delivered. The convenience is worth it for us. And I have to say that we've never had a delivery person give us any kind of attitude at all; they're all really nice people....unlike some of the waitresses we've had in restaurants.

We don't eat out that often, only if we have gift cards or if it's a special day. Largely because, like Kat0121, I can't stand dealing with the little kids screaming and carrying on while the parents pretend they don't hear anything.

Anyway......I do tip my hair stylist, as I mentioned before. I go in every month for roots and I've gotten to know her well. I don't think you're supposed to tip a stylist if she owns her own business; I could be wrong. But I always did anyway. And she is now working for Ulta (I won't go into reasons as it's nobody's business), so now I have to go to Ulta if I want her to continue working on my hair....and I do. So for the holidays, she gets the cost of the root color. Any other month, I just give her $12. She does a good job, probably the best stylist I've been to in years.

ETA: It bugged me so I googled:  "In 2005, Papa John's implemented delivery charges in the majority of its company-owned stores to increase profits. Papa John's current delivery charge (late 2010) is $2.50. The delivery fee is not part of the drivers tip. This is stated on pizza boxes and delivery receipts."  http://www.city-data.com/forum/food-drink/1234563-what-pizza-delivery-charge.html  I really don't think it's that much around here, but will have to check next time we order pizza. Domino's does the same thing, I think.

I was suspicious that those delivery charges were for no reason but to go in the company's pocket.  They are a fairly recent thing.  I think they started about the time that the chains started trying to outdo themselves on prices.  I do wonder about the low prices on specials.  There would have to be a slim profit margin on those pizzas so they are making up for it with the delivery charge.

I don't have anyone to tip. The postal people are never the same on the road, the trash people are contracted through our park=maybe Jon tips them?  I am never home when trash is picked up. He tips better than I do. I too understand how hard a job is but like you guys I haven't gone out to eat in months due to :loud conversations-kids-rude people-tables crammed so close I can't push my chair out to get comfortable. And they make the servers do too much-salad and desert prep as well as run  back and forth and they seem to always have those annoying associate managers who walk around trying to find out if anyone is happy-now I hope this is genuine but I would hate to see staff get a ticked off manager so I often just shut my mouth because I know how backbiting they are. I used to work in service industry. The people are rude. customers don't read. they whine and their kids are little
. I just don't enjoy it anymore. in 10 years things have gone down hill. The only good thing-no smoking in public but the rude people don't make up for it sometimes.

I don't have a hairdresser and don't really have anyone I hire for work. The one person I had to big projects on my house got plenty of money out of me so no I am not tipping.

Maybe I am a grouch..or maybe I am like Winchester-my cooking is better than most places=nowadays it's all generic seasoning or deep fried chicken. fries and no real skill to making it. Or they use premixed ingredients-it's convenient but sometimes they use too many salty flavor addons. I just prefer my sisters cooking over restaurants.

When we do go out for breakfast we tip well because we see what others leave- $2 isn't going to cut it..generally I tip $5 a meal regardless-we don't go to expensive places or we get the specials. I wouldn't go to any upscale places-I don't like fancy food. I like good old fashioned real food.

Delivery charge=bogus bs. They should pay the drivers better. I have heard the stories. The only thing that's good about being a driver is getting out of a hot kitchen with an assistant manager over your shoulder every 5 min. (I could never go back to that kind of micromanagement BS!)

I agree. I have heard that the reason they do this is to pay for the containers that the take out food goes in as well as those heat saving boxes/containers that they put pizzas in to keep them hot. I have no idea if this is true or not but if it is, that's part of your overhead. They don't charge for those containers if you take your leftovers home so really it is a bogus BS charge IMO.

Being a driver is NOT easy. We have a large office with a lot of people so we get a lot of deliveries. One woman who gets a lot of deliveries (but is a tipping tightwad) didn't leave enough money for the order with the receptionist. It was about .25 short and NO tip. When the receptionist called her to get her food, she argued with the driver about the .25 cents. She refused to pay it and so did he- WHY should he? It should not cost him money to do his job. She got mad and threw the food at him. Yup. Really. Someone here had to talk him out of pressing charges but the cops were called. Over .25 cents. Would you believe that she still works here?
She would have been gone that day if it had been up to me. She made all of us look bad.

Domino's does do the same thing. They have it posted all over the place that the driver does not get the delivery charge. They get $2.49 for it.

DD and I just get take out. It's so much easier and I can eat in peace.

I love Ulta. One of my favorite guilty pleasure stores.

We got delivery pizza last night from a really good independent place around here. They do not charge a delivery fee; it's just pay the driver. I asked them. Which is probably why their pizza is a little more expensive. Really good pizza though.....more of the old-fashioned kind of pizza, not a Papa John type.

I like Ulta, too. I just started going there. This week was my third time; my hair dresser just started there. Next year, my points don't expire. I think that once you spend $450 in a year, the points will continue to accrue and I'll have that by next August. This year, the points will expire at the end of this month, so I want to use them while I can. And their Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale is going on right now. I'll probably spend it on conditioner for my hair.....I'm a real bear about conditioning my hair, especially during the winter.
