I've only posted here once since I joined. In the Newbie Intro section. I've been wanting to post pics, etc., but I've been so busy (with work) that I haven't had much time online. And now I'm here, but only because I need to share something that has really upset me.

It's not about cats, so I apologize -- It's about 2 dogs that were just killed in my building by a neighbor.

I woke at 3ish AM to a woman screaming, then I heard a familiar sounding dog barking like crazy, and then my phone rang. I knew who it would be before I even looked at the caller ID. My upstairs neighbor called me. His dog was the one who had barked. Her name is Bella and she's a sweetheart... She barked because of what she saw: 2 tiny poodles lying on the courtyard below. Chris, my friend, explained that he had heard people on the roof, then heard the scream, then heard Bella and went to see what was up. When he saw the poodles, he pulled Bella inside quickly. She's a very sensitive dog and has befriended almost every other animal in the building, aside from a handful of my cats.

Anyway, I walked out to the courtyard and saw two pools of blood, no dogs. I was repulsed. It was obvious they had been thrown from the roof. It was no accident. I prefer to not get into the details of how I could tell -- I don't want to think about that anymore. I did call the police. I told them what I knew, showed them the courtyard, then they went upstairs and spoke with Chris. And that was it. They left. No arrests, no futher investigation. Both Chris and I saw a woman kneeling in the courtyard crying. We gave descriptions of who, potentially, is the key witness! Why did the cops seem to not care? Why did they leave so quickly? This is animal cruelty at its worse!

I'm sad, I'm sick to my stomach, I'm mad, and I don't know what more I can do that I haven't already done. I can't get back to sleep and there's a lump in my throat. Why do people do such things? I just don't understand!

I'm so sorry to tell you all this. If the mods need to delete it, I understand. I know it's terrible & off topic, but I just feel like talking, I dunno, telling someone and it's too late/early to call my friends or family. When something like this happens I have to get it off my chest or I'll go crazy. I don't know what else to do. -Mel

That is just awful! I can imagine how you must feel. I don't understand how people can do such terrible things to animals.

Since you were the one who reported the incident, you can probably call the police again and ask for an update. I don't think they will ignore the inquiries of a concerned citizen.

You think? I don't want to feel like I'm nagging them or bothering them... Maybe I'm being too, um, paranoid... (Not sure that's the right word, but close enough)... *sigh*

If I'm correct, that falls under animal cruelty, and that is a crime, so bug the heck out of them !

Another suggestion...an anonymous tip to either the newspapers or tv station that this happened and the police seem to be ignoring it! The press loves to report on apathy and corruption in the police!

That's exactly what I was going to suggest. Nothing like some BIG public pressure on an animal cruelty case to stop the police from dragging their feet.

Also, be aware of the law here (from www.StrayPetAdvocacy.org where we have all of the cruelty laws summarized and links to the text of the state laws...)

California
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/di...&file=594-625c
Cal Penal Code 596-597

Cruelty to animals is defined as “Maliciously and intentionally mains, mutilates, tortures, or wounds a living animal, or maliciously and intentionally kills an animal; or overdrives, overloads, drives when overloaded, overworks, tortures, torments, deprives of necessary sustenance, drink, or shelter, cruelly beats, mutilates, or cruelly kills any animal or causes or procures any animal to be so treated.†Animals shall be seized and impounded and ownership forfeited. These crimes may be charged as either a misdemeanor or felony, with punishment of a fine up to $20,000 and/or imprisonment up to 1 year. If a defendant is granted probation for a conviction, the defendant must pay for and successfully complete counseling as determined by the court. It is also a misdemeanor to “Carry or causes to be carried in or upon any vehicle or otherwise any domestic animal in a cruel or inhumane manner.†Exemptions are made for farming, hunting and research.

I'm so sorry you had to witness something that horrible. Some people are just monsters, and that's why it's so important to follow up with something like this. It is a proven fact that animal cruelty is almost always followed by abuse of people, especially children.

I don't know what part of Ca you are in, but where I am the police don't like investigating much. My friends and I were out one day at a park, and one of them was climbing a tree and saw something on the restroom roof, so he climbed up it and it was a bloody hunting knife, so we called the police and they said an elderly man had gone missing so all of their officers were out looking for him! We were so mad, they went back a week later and it was missing...

I took out a lot of details here, like there was a strange man there when we found it, I took a picture of the knife and the guy said to make sure and not get him in it, then he drove away and we saw him drive back and forth past us many times!

I really hope you do find out who did this horrible thing, they deserve to be thrown from the roof as well!

There are a few points here I want to comment on:

I have a friend who works as a field reporter for KCAL 9. I sent him an e-mail explaining the whole thing. We'll see if there's anything he can do with it. He likes to do "human interest" stories and I'd say this falls under that category.

Thank you for the info on CA laws. That'll be extremely helpful in dealing with both the cops and the news reporter.

And then there's the abuse issue. I waited until I could call my Mum. (She lives in Mass.) I told her the whole thing and we tried to think of why anyone would do such a thing. Granted all we came up with is conjecture, speculation, but my Mum was saying that often people who can actually hurt or kill small animals are more likely to hurt or kill people. Like, it's not a big step for them. A relative of ours, my Mum told me, took her kids and left her husband in the middle of the night b/c he killed their puppy. She just figured if he could do that, he could do anything. So now I even fear for this girl's life. Could it be an enraged ex-lover? If so, why has SHE not called the police? ...goodness...

There is also a big connection between domestic violence and animal cruelty. Many times the abuser uses the victim's love for their animals as a weapon against them. So if these weren't the girl's only animals, it could be "Don't you dare report it or I'll do worse to your...."

Your relative was very smart to leave that situation because it isn't much of a jump at all to go from a helpless animal to a helpless child....

Definitely bug the police and the reporters. Write everything down that you remember so you don't forget anyhting. You and this neighbor were the only witnesses? apart from that greiving lady?

I know this is a long shot, but is it possible that the dogs accidently fell off a balcony? Darrell's cat did that once "She-she" fell from the balcony of the seventh floor and survived because she landed in a bush.

There are so many probabilities why someone would do that... disturbed mentality comes to mind.

Did your reporter friend get back to you yet? Keep bugging because as long as you're doing something you will feel better.

keep us posted.

I agree that you should call the police and ask for an update on this situation. Maybe you could also find the woman who was in the courtyard and really encourage her to talk to the police too. If someone threatened to harm her for reporting this incident, the police need to know about it. And if she was actually threatened, the woman could probably go to a women's shelter until the danger to her personal safety was over.

You didn't say how many stories these poor dogs were thrown, but since this has already happened, I really hope they both died on impact and didn't go through any suffering at all. In my opinion, anyone who could do something this horrible and senseless is an inhuman monster and SHOULD NOT get away with this!!!!!!!

Those poor precious dogs!!!!!

OMG! those poor poodles! Yes I agree with all of the above call and call and call. if they don't like it, tough, they need to get out and do their jobs, you might want to try your local humane society and give them yout story, it might help you never know!

That is awful. I can't believe people would actually do stuff like that. Have you called your humane society? I found out not long ago that the humane society here does neglect, abuse and cruelty investigations. Maybe they would stay on top of things better? It's worth a try.
